Yeah, except all of us California munchkins could have Meg as a governor next. She is considering running. As a repugnican. Gee, who'da thunk? She's a bazillionaire so I'm sure she can relate perfectly to the endangered species commonly known as the middle class.

"EBay is seeking to reverse slowing revenue growth in its marketplaces business, which is roughly half the level of three years ago. The company telegraphed that changes were in store last week when it reported its 2007 year-end results."

Well Something Has To Give

Purchased a computer system off fleaBay several weeks ago, and sure enough it arrived via UPS damaged. Seller packed both the monitor and CPU in the same large box (a food store type discar, that was barely closed on top), with another bit of box making inside with wadded newspaper as padding. CPU had a bit of old bubble wrap around it, but only just. Needless to say the CPU is dead and looks like it was whacked with a baseball bat. Am sending the lot back and contacting my credit card company to get my money back.

Am really sick of eBay sellers, especially on high final price items, scrimping on shipping materials, so items usually arrive damaged. Contacting UPS or the USPS to file a claim is not always the soluton as one must keep the original packaging. UPS has rather strict criteria on what counts as proper packing, and any old bit of tat laying around doesn't cut it. More often then not they will say the package was not up to snuff and won't pay, and who can blame them?

It wouldn't gall me so much, except that some sellers charge very high shipping AND handling fees, only to use either USPS free packaging, or any cheap box they find on the street, with newspaper (it's cheap, and usually always lying around spare).

I didn't have a box large enough for the monitor, but went out walking about on the scrounge last night, and found a HP desktop box in a building's recycling rubbish on the curb. Even better it contained all the styrofoam and bubble wrap needed to securely pack the monitor and CPU. The CPU went into it's own box, packed and secured with huge blocks of styrofoam, and bubble wrap. I used a U-line shipping box as well.

What these eBay seller's don't get, is something anyone who ships things on a regular basis knows; UPS, USPS and the rest chuck packages about like they are playing rugby! How many times has one carefully packed an item, gone up to the postal window only to have the clerk take the package and lob it several feet into a bin, and that is only for the start of the journey!

Just my two cents about ebay purchases and "damaged" experiences. Always request extra insurance if offered. Save all packing material if item arrives damaged and contact the shipper immediately. Then notify the carrier (UPS. FedEX, etc.). Take digital pictures of the all damaged components.

From an economic standpoint it is not wise to purchase something that costs more to ship than what the item is worth. It's like buying a house that someone over-priced because they added all the extra ammenities. Even the appraisers won't appraise a house higher in that case. Likewise, one should never pay for that excess. Flat rate shipping is another example of this. Why pay more when it is not warranted or justified? Remember, the market will tolerate what the market is willing to bear.

Personally, what has been working for me is to tell people I know about my hobbies and the things I collect. You will be surprised how many things find their to me! And, most often times they are given to me for free!!

In this instance, did request insurance, but seller didn't add, which is often the case.

Even when insured, it is not always a given you will get back what the amount covered, or even a portion. In UPS's case they only deal with the person who shipped the item. Meaning if the claim is approved, the funds go to the shipper. It will be up to you to get a refund from the seller.

Also as stated, UPS, USPS and others have tightened up on paying out refunds for items that are improperly packaged (in their eyes). Afterall if an item is badly packaged, then no matter how carefully it is transported, it is subject to damage.

On balance, tend to agree with you though, and have been limiting my eBay purchases lately to an amount I can afford to "loose". Always use either my gold Mastercard or Amex, for easy chargebacks if the situation warrants. Paypal takes way to long and or sometimes makes only partial refunds.

This Just In...

"...EBay’s highly touted cut in sellers’ fees announced this morning is not so clearly a boon for sellers as it may appear at first look. AuctionBytes, a newsletter and blog for EBay sellers, calculated that for some scenarios, sellers actually will end up paying more than they did before. In one comparison, the fees increased by 33 percent. What is more, eBay’s changes to its feedback system have many sellers up in arms."

"Sellers May No Longer Leave Negative or Neutral Feedba

I LOVE IT!

Far too often a the only satisfaction a buyer has in a deal gone bad was to leave neutral or negative feedback, only to have a retalitory neg left by the seller; sellers would then often follow-up later with a request to mutually agree to remove feed-back.

Amazon.com and other auction sites are punching eBay's clock, and the later is now sitting up and taking notice.

I questioned one seller about shipping costs of $18+ for a $7 mug. Among other things, she said that the post office was a long drive into town and gas had gone up so much. I told her it looked to me like she was trying to make more money off the shipping than the mug.

Dear, if it's that much trouble for you to ship what you want to sell, just get out of the game. Put it on a card table in the front yard one Saturday morning, if it's not too much trouble to drag it from the house to the yard.

Must have been the same seller I had. The item cost $8.00 to ship and she charged $27.00 for shipping. When I questioned it she said that I had to pay for her gas AND time to get to the Post Office, then pay for the time she spends standing in line as well.
I just told her, "Honey, that's known as the cost of doing business!".

Maybe this will be the end of the expensive item that goes for $9.99 with a shipping charge of $299.00. We have all seen those!

Oh yeah, I'm done with "rip-off" shipping charges by E-Bay sellers. I let 'em know about Fed-Ex Ground, and then if they still want to rip me off I burn 'em with negative feedback.

I always memo the seller to be sure to "pack the item carefully as a damaged item is unacceptable" and "send me a tracking number". That way if there is a problem and the folks at E-Bay need proof, all they need to do is look at the memo I left right there on the transaction record.

For along time now many who are considered "power sellers" on eBay have been leaving and or giving voice to the concerns that the lower element sellers are making things bad for the rest. Worse for eBay the power sellers have been defecting to rival auction sites or Craigslist, some even going back to working the fleamarket/yard sale route. Methinks eBay is finally taking notice more to protect it's share price and market share than out of any feelings towards buyers.

Ebay has really become a huge wild west market place when compared to the early days. Between acting as a fence for stolen goods, and rip off sellers, many buyers and sellers are choosing to go elsewhere.

"In UPS's case they only deal with the person who shipped the item. Meaning if the claim is approved, the funds go to the shipper."

However, if your shipper is honest about it, they'll request that UPS send the check to you. IIRC, there's a place on the claim form to note that, but I could be thinking of the USPS form, which I know has that.

Lousy packers suck!

BTW: If you ever have a situation like this again, and have the email you sent requesting the additional insurance, be sure to save it! Especially when dealing with Paypal. I've found that with them, the more information you can give them the better.

High sh/handling???

More and more people need to report this to eBay! They have a line for it on their listing violations page. Start with the link below (something I have in my favorites file), check Listing Violations then Continue. 1st box, select Listing Policy Violations. 2nd box, Excessive Shipping And Handling, and the same for the 3rd box. Click Continue. On the next page, click EMAIL US and you'll get the actual form where you can enter up to 10 item numbers before clicking SEND.

It does work! I've done my share of reporting this, and have seen auctions removed if the same seller is doing it a lot!
