finally found a photo of the first dishwasher we ever had!

When I was a kid we had this before we redid the kitchen and got the built in Roper.  It had the coolest buttons and lights and made all sorts of sounds when the timer was advancing.

 

Anyone know any more about it?  Was a cool machine.  would love to see better photos of it or an owner's manual (heaven!)

for me as a kid i had this kenmore dishwasher in harvest gold and my godmother had a similar model but with a white start button see pic number 2 in white credit to turq for the picture

Mike thanks for the pictures.  I always did like the dark/black dial on these better than the white ones.  Would you mind telling me what the cycles are on the dial--normal, short, rinse&dry, plate warmer/dry???

Hotpoint 1972 portable. Notice on the control panel it says whisper clean! It was very far from a whisper!

This was our first dishwaher.  Although technically, my dad has told me they had an Apex before I was born, but it as so pathetic, they removed it.  Now I understand why the Waste King went in so easily lol.  And of course, we've already seen the subsequent Waste King as well as the RotoRack and the GE GSD1200.

We had the basic white Wards BOL version of those Frigidaires for our first-ever machine.  It looked like Mike's, but had no chrome trim or rinse/hold option.  Just a cheap looking timer on the front that wasn't even a knob.  You grabbed the pointer to rotate it and it popped out at the end.  Pushing it in would start the machine for the next wash.

 

I don't remember the upper racks lifting up with the lid.  I think they were fixed in place but left a large opening to access the lower rack.

 

That thing was loud!  It lived in the same spot in the picture below where the ISE is now located.  That's why the counter is higher than average and the ISE and its built-in predecessors all have had to sit on 2x4 skids in order to make up for the extra height of the casters on the Signature machine.  ISE picture was taken just after finishing installation of the stainless panels. The kick plate shown is extra, and made of wood.  The one on the machine leaves a gap above the floor.  This is how it has had to work with every built-in that followed the Signature machine.  When/if the kitchen gets blown up, that will change.  But the ISE won't!

Not the exact first KDI-17a bought in summer of 1975, but the same model (in avocado instead of stainless steel) that was in the next house we moved to in 1980.

Bob, The Home position for the dial is shown here. Then around the dial, there is a start position for a Short Wash, then the remaining wording on the dial is Rinse, and Platewarmer-Dry.

I don't think our Signature was any newer than 1971. It had no "Short Wash" option. This thread is the first time I've seen a picture of nearly the same machine. Thanks for posting!

Instead of a rinse and hold switch, we had a series of buttons and lights in that space - and no dial - wonder if it was a Custom Imperial??  

 

I do remember seeing ones like yours when we were shopping in the home stores (all local or regional outfits - no Home Dome or anything like that then).  I was always in the appliance section in whatever store we were shopping in.  I must have drove the sales people nuts!

 

Thanks for the photos...brought back some memories.  Is your machine operational?  We gave ours to some friends who never installed it - it just sat in their garage for years.  When I was first thinking about buying my first home, I had a fantasy of rescuing it - it has to be long gone by now.
