Finally found my combo? Hotpoint

Hi guys,
I think I have finally found my combo fridge for the country house. It’s a Hotpoint. The interior is in very good condition, but it needs a paint job.I’m attaching pictures. The seals are intact but not very flexible. Do you think it needs new ones? Anybody got seals that will fit?

As some of you may remember, I’m going to be putting it in an unconditioned kitchen. The last fridge I painted for the house rusted from underneath the paint. Can y’all help me paint it properly so that it won’t rust?

The current price is $195. What do y’all think? Should I buy it?

Freezer temp -9

Too cold in the fridge. Just right in the freezer. It’s in an outside storage room, and I really like it. I would feel much happier; however, if I could see how it performs in the summertime in an outdoor store room. It’s priced at $195 today, if it’s still around tomorrow I’ll consider it.

That's a 56 or 57. I can understand some minimal rust just due to age. But the amount on that seems somewhat excessive. Maybe it spent years in an unheated building or on an open porch? Check the bottom edge of both doors. I got a 55 GE a few years ago that had rusted at the bottom of the lower door from the inside to the point of having holes in it.

If the gaskets are hard they should be replaced. Will definitely make a difference in how often the freezer will need to be defrosted. There are companies online that sell replacements. They might have one that matches the profile. Also try Antique Appliances in GA. Here's the link to their door gasket page:

-9 degrees in the freezer is actually colder than it needs to be. If the freezer was at 0 or a little above that just might make the difference in the refrigerated section to bring the temperature up where it should be.

There are many things to take into consideration as far as price. How much you want it and are willing to pay. What the seller is willing to take. But personally I think $195.00 is high for the condition its in. I have one just like it I got about one year ago for $40.00. Here's my thread from when I got it. Thanks Ken,
It is structurally sound. It has that light coating of rust, but there are no holes or wobbly spots. The sale will go down in price tomorrow, and I’m going to wait till then and make an offer. If somebody buys it for full price, I’ll keep looking. I’d rather have one that does not need a new paint job. Combos are very common around here, and my need is a little bit more urgent because the fridge I had in the country house is dead.

Ken, wow! you really do have the same fridge. Thanks for posting the link to your thread. I was hoping for a defrost drain, and but I don't see a place in the freezer compartment for it to drain.

Right. In that respect GE's are more convenient. They do have a drain hole to make defrosting the freezer easier.

Yes, the one I have is a twin to the one you're considering.

I enjoyed reading about your fridge. How well did the exterior clean up?

Funny thing, I found the milk glass leftovers dishes at an estate sale some years ago and sold them on eBay. It looks like the leftovers thing might have gone where the small shelf is and been a shelf unto itself that rotated out.

Does this one warm the butter?

And I surely am glad it isn't the deluxe one--that door shelf looks like a disaster!

I didn't do anything with mine. Its the same as when I brought it home and added it to the "collection".

Im not familiar with the "LEFT-OVERS" rack you show. If it did mount in the location where the small upper shelf mounts in the 56-57 it would have been a different year. GE had a similar wire basket for eggs in early 50s models that mounted in that location.

As I remember there is no butter warmer.

I don't believe all deluxe models had the door mounted crisper bin. I think you could get a deluxe model with the standard crispers inside. Maybe someone else here could shed light on that?

Thanks. Those pictures are great. It looks like the leftovers basket is swinging out a bit in the middle picture. I don't think the basket would work in your fridge or the one I'm looking at, but it would be cool to have the milk glass containers. They had plastic lids which I thought was odd.

I was kind of on the fence about it, then my sister called from Columbia, SC with a crisis, and I headed up there.

So, I'll let y'all know what comes along next. I'm thinking about buying a used mini-fridge for the time being. (we're a college town, and they are abundant) I know the right combo is out there...
