finally got my maytag 806 washer & 808 dryer!!!

as for the stop ring, i didn't take the stop ring off, when i cleaned the agitator shaft. i didn't know i was supposed to take the stop ring off & clean underneath it too, since i didn't do that with the 208 or the 608.

as for the splined hole in the agitator, i did clean that out with a toothbrush. and even when the vaseline was gobbing out, when i would put the agitator onto the shaft, i ended up wiping all the vaseline out of the splined agitator hole, with q-tips. so that is nice & clean now.

i've cleaned out all the vaseline from the agitator hole & splines. and i now removed the stop ring and cleaned the groove where the stop rings fits into, with a wire-brush and some dawn dish soap.
also, the agitator doesn't have a set-screw on the side. i also placed the agitator down onto the shaft, while the stop ring is off, and the agitator went down all the way, with no problem. so i think you are right, the problem is the stop ring may have swelled up.
i also noticed 2 cracks running along the top edge of the stop ring too. i could see the cracks, when i was squeezing the stop ring.

when i put the agitator back onto the shaft, i will remember to apply a "thin coating" to both surfaces & wiggle the agitator slightly as i'm pushing it down onto the shaft.

update:
since i have the stop ring off the agitator shaft right now & noticed 2 cracks along the top edge of the stop ring, i have decided to buy a new stop ring on ebay and put the new stop ring on the machine and throw away the old stop ring. this the stop ring seems to be the problem.

i will remember to lightly grease the agitator shaft & the groove for the stop ring, before putting the new stop ring on. and then, i will put the agitator on. should i put some vaseline on the stop ring too, once i've got it into position on the agitator shaft, so that the agitator will slide over the stop ring easily?

Yes, after you lightly grease the drive shaft, slide the stop ring down and in place and redistribute some of the Vaseline onto the stop ring. If the agitator has a set screw but it pops in place and stays tight you don't have to use the set screw if you don't want. But you have to make sure that set screw whole is plugged or the water tight seal will be compromised. You could either cut the screw off and tighten it down until the little "O" ring on the screw is up snug against the agitator or you could take it out and plug the whole with some kind of water proof caulk or JB Weld, but if you use JB Weld there probably won't be any way of going back. That stuff turns hard as a rock and would have to be carefully drilled out to use the screw set-up again.

Considering the age of you're machines I wonder if that's a replacement agitator. I don't think they started using set screw agitators until some time in the mid '80's when the orbital trans. came into being or maybe shortly before. Could have been a transitional period, though. I have a Powerfin agitator with a set screw and it pops over a stop ring just fine. If you use the set screw in combination with the stop ring it will dig into the stop ring and the agitator may rotate a bit slightly off center. I guess it's just a personal preference but I prefer not to use set screws if I don't have to. You could experiment with it for awhile and see what works best for you. Hope this helps.

i am soooo greatful that these little setbacks i've been having so far (the stuck agitator, the water injector tube, sleeve & valve, and now the stop ring) have all been minor fixes. and i am so thankful that i have roger that i can call on the phone for his opinion & help and that i have you guys to turn to for advice too!!!

ok, final update (i think?).....

so the new stop ring arrived today and of course, i've had the vaseline out just waiting for the stop ring to arrive so i could put it to use. i lightly coated the agitator shaft, got the stop ring slid down into it's groove, and continued to rub the vaseline onto the stop ring as well. now the moment of thruth....

so, i positioned the agitator onto the shaft and slid it down as far as it would go and then, i pushed down on the agitator but i couldn't get it to "pop" over the stop ring. i pulled the agitator up and there was some small gobs of vaseline at the openining of the agitator shaft hole. so i wiped that off and took a q-tip and wiped off the splines inside as well. i said, "ok let's give this another try" and positioned the agitator onto the shaft again and tried to push down on it again and nothing.....

well, after like 2 more times and also wiping the agitator shaft with the q-tip as well, i FINALLY got the dang agitator to "pop" over the agitator ring!!! althought it was kinda hard to "pop" the agitator off, over the stop ring. i kept doing it over & over again, turning the agitator position a bit, to make sure that i "pop" the agitator onto the shaft, in different positions. and little by little, it got easier & easier.

it's no where as easy to pop the agitator on & off, on this 806, like it was on the 608 or the 208. those 2 machines were so easy to take the agitator off. the 806 agitator seems to be more finicky at how much vaseline i can put on the agitator shaft!!!

but i'm happy to say that i can now "pop" the agitator on & off, over the new stop ring.

next thing on the list?
to wash some laundry!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try the 608/208 agitators on the A806, if they go on easier then the 806 agitator is the problem.

I didn't realize you may have spare machines around or would have suggested this earlier.

sorry for the delayed response.
as for having spare machines around, i don't. i first got the 208 and when i found the 608, i gave my dad the 208. and when i found the 806, i told my dad he could have the 608, because he wanted a larger tubbed washing machine to be able to wash blankets & things. and since at the time, only had a gas dryer, he is looking into putting in electricity for an electric dryer and he'll be taking the DE308 along with the 608.

now for an update on my 806:
since putting the new stop ring on the agitator shaft, i've been popping the agitator on & off of the shaft and little by little it is getting easier & easier. but i did notice i would find some little, hard, black, rubber bits, when i would pop the agitator off. the bits were around the agitator shaft. not alot. just like one or two bits. i'm thinking it might be bits coming off either the new stop ring? or else maybe there were some bits from the old stop ring, stuck in the stop ring groove, in the agitator shaft?
but i am able to push & pull the agitator on & off, with a pop now, everytime i do it.

also, i did take a video with my phone, of the 806 in action, to share with you all. and i sent the video to my email address. the problem is, i can't figure out how to load it on here? i can open & play the video, through my email. and i saved it to a file on my computer. but i can't find the file to upload it in this thread??
so since i'm not too hip to technology, i'm afraid i can't share the 2 short videos i made, with you, of the 806 washing away :o(

maybe if i can figure it out later, than i can upload some videos.

thank you chris. that is much appreciated. you must of definitely been the guy in phoenix that kept calling luke for updates on the sale.
luke was a really nice guy and a man of his word.

i know what you mean about "procrastinating" because i did the same thing too. i seen the listing posted here by phil, and i thought $200, that pretty steep for me. so i didn't give the ad a 2nd thought. but as time went on, i kept thinking,
"if i don't at least call the seller & see if they are still available (and if they are) go & check them out, it's going to drive me crazy, not knowing if they were in good condition or if they had been abused or what".
so, i decided to find the ad and when i did, luke had just reduced the price from $200 to $150 and that's when i KNEW i had to at least go and check them out! i mean, i paid $50 for the 208 & $40 for the 608. if i ended up getting this set, that would make it $75 for a 806! so i called to see if they were still available. and luckily they were. i don't think you had called about them yet.

it was only after me & luke got our schedules organized & could arrange for me to go check them out, that luke told me that someone in phoenix had called about the set too.
and after checking them out & deciding i wanted them, i sealed the deal with luke by giving him a deposit until i could get the rest of the money. of course, i did ask him if he would sell them separately but he said "no deal. they were being sold as a set". and i was like "ok twist my arm, i'll take the dryer too".
LOL....

you know, luke said to me "there's a guy in phoenix who's been calling about these too. i didn't think there would be much interest in a washing machine." or something to that effect.

thank you again for the good luck wishes chris. i guess no matter what, this set was going to end up with either a "mommy" or "daddy" named chris, huh??

update...

well, i've got the 808 dryer moved into the backroom, off the kitchen, where we have our newer whirlpool & 806 maytag washers & newer whirlpool dryer.
and i've even got the 808 in it's place, with the power cord positioned behind the refrigerator, ready to be plugged in!!
now the only thing i have leftm is to buy 2 90 degree elbow connections & some dryer venting tube and the 808 dryer will be able to be used!!!
hm hm hm.....

thank you roger for helping me bring the 808 inside, out of the cold...

thank you so much. i am very happy with the washer so far, and can't wait to get the dryer going. which should be real soon!!! i just have to buy a couple of 90 degree elbows and tube to set up the exhaust vent and the dryer is ready to go!!
