Firmware update Speed Queen Washers

Well I just got a call from my mother, she couldn't get our recent model SQ AFN50RSP113TW01
To start the load, and the light was blinking. I told her to make sure the door was properly closed and hold the start button for at least 2 seconds...no dice.
Then I told her to unplug and replug in the machine, success.
This isn't the first time we had to "reboot" this unit...any thoughts?

Some machines tend to be more succeptable for such issues. For example, some electronics never power down completly. They stay in a state simmilar to your PCs standby mode. Drawing a every so slight amperage. And sometimes, they just get cought in some loop due to buffer overflows or such. Not an IT tech, but I don't think its anything to worry about.

but, I would suspect a voltage issue effecting your machine's electronics. Which light was flashing? There's no harm in reaching out to Speed Queen with your concerns and see what they have to say.

I think Malcolm is on to it. Neighbors of mine have a Rinnai heater and every time there is the least power fluctuations, you have to unplug to reset it, just like you do a microwave if there is a blink in the power.

"Firmware Update" are two words I think should never apply to a washing machine. This thread made me do a double take!

I honestly believe that at least connecting a surge protector to your machine won't hurt it and may actually help to protect it. The way how they work is that they have a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) which shorts out any high voltage spikes, sacrificing itself in the process.

Firmware reboot

Yes, as Malcolm suggested contact Speed Queen for their comment and check out what voltage your outlet is delivering-crazy things can happen-I recently thought a friends old Maytag motor was bad-it would not spin with laundry, only empty, belts were ok, voltage was varying between 108 and 133 because a tree branch was pulling on power line. New power line and 25+ year old Maytag is fine. Thanks Qualin for surge suppressor advice. I will also restate my Fisher&Paykel owner's manual advice to unplug machine between uses-not super convenient but totally isolates electronics from power variations and lightning strikes. Much cheaper than a new control board though.
