Anyone have any problems with the fisher paykel washer?

Are you having a problem with one?
Every single day, as an authorized servicer I get a lot of calls. The pumps can leak and take out the controller, the diverter valves fail or get clogged, the drive splines for the spin tub wear out. Everything can break. F&P builds a great machine, very well designed.

center tub seal & bearing: I have yet to see either fail
motor rotor, stator: Rock solid, no failures in normal use. had a guy who dropped his unit (never got a real explanation) and cracked a magnet in the rotor
position sensor: I see about one a year
water valves: one or two a year
tub suspension (including tub mounts, springs & struts): I have yet to see any of these fail in normal use. I had a customer who ran his car mats through and one of the struts came out of the tub mounting hole but didn't break anything.

I called F&P before I bought my GWL08 in 1999, asking about reliability, repairs and so forth. The phone rep said, in a musing/pondering tone of voice with charming accent, "I don't think we've ever had a SmartDrive motor fail." I took her remark with the appropriate bit of skepticism, thinking how could a front-line customer phone rep know that, other than being scripted?
I've run across posts on other forums from people saying something broke in their machine just a few months/couple years old, whatever, and now the tub is hanging crooked. I've wondered how many of those cases were perhaps due to abuse of some sort.
I've related (at least once, LOL) that my GWL08 was flooded in November 2004 in 12" to 14" of water for 8 to 12 hours, and was connected to electric power for part of that time until we got there to disconnect it and "rescue" my grandmother. If I'm not mistaken, the GWL08's motor is under power for the braking function whenever the machine is plugged in but turned off. Rotating the basket manually gives a feel of some "cogging" on the motor, which disappears when the plug is pulled. There were no fried components or blown boards, it ran fine after drying out for several days, and continues to do so.

Love my F&P
I have a F&P set (top load dryer) and I love them. They are both quiet and do great work. Have had them about a year with absolutely no problems. The dryer is the best one I've ever had.
I would do it again. I am especially happy now that I know how to fool the machine into thinking the lid is locked so I can watch what's going on.

Here's a video clip of one of my 8-jeans loads. It's not the entire cycle, sequences are truncated and it ends shortly after the post-wash spin gets started. But it gives an idea of how the machine handles a BobLoad®. The clip is 7 mins 43 seconds, and 18 MB. Apologizes to those on dial-up, please be patient for downloading to play offline.
The machine isn't quite as noisy as the clip makes it to be. Acoustics in my utility room exaggerate the sound. Apologies also for the background whine from the camera tape transport. Color balance is a little off-kilter, that Downy Advanced should be blue, not purple!

Note how it fills for the EcoActive wash phase, then fills more after recirculation begins to "top-off" the EcoActive level. EcoActive fill is at the selected temperature. Deep wash is a cold fill.
This load went to high water level without doing any test agitation strokes for water level sensing, which is unusual. The initial agitation strokes you see are for fabric sensing, not water level sensing. The water level is topped-off twice at the start of deep wash.
The pump pulses off/on during drain, that is not a malfunction.
CW/CCW rotation at end of drain is to assist the basket in settling down on the drive hub and to confirm it has done so. Intertia tells the story via the position sensor in the motor.
The initial slow spin speed is part of off-balance sensing. Post-wash spin runs at 300 RPM [continues for a spray rinse, ramps up to 670 RPM for a few seconds, slows to 300 RPM for several more sprays, 670 again, then the deep rinse begins].

Great washer demo you shared there! Many thanks! In my situation, the audio worked well for me. Sounded like my former roommate's F&P washer. I got one whale of a kick out of using that thang. In fact, I remember putting it through a good Ol BobLoad® test, and it performed quite similarly to what you just demonstrated. There was one instance, during a routine wash, where I had to stop the machine and manually balance the load, as these machines are not foolproof. Once that load was properly shifted around, and the machine restarted, it worked well and spun out through that high speed final like a dream. Other than that, that F&P washer was loads of fun to watch.--Laundry Shark

Did you permanently defeat the lid lock on your washer?
I was looking at the IWL16 over the weekend and am giving it serious consideration, but noted that the lid locked as soon as the cycle was started. I'm a control freak in this regard and like to see what's going on with my wash, so finding a way to pop the lid whenever needed would be pretty important.

Not a permanent defeat (don't want to do any potential damage), just a little trickery. IWL12 locks only during spin. IWL16 during the entire cycle? How very irritating!

the f&p washer...
wow never knew it worked like that its so far the only washer with an agitator that moves "back and forth" that i like LOL! in my opinion by the looks of it it should give very good to excellent washing results, dont understand why CR's would give it only a "good" rating by the way more vids please its very unique the f&p!

No, the Cabrioasis works like a Fishy-Pickle. WP is using F&P technology under license to have a head start on 2012 water usage regulations. Pretty soon it'll be the only kind of top-loader you can buy new. The latest model from F&P is the WL26CW1 called the Aquasmart. No center agitator and the distinctive low speed "growl" has been engineered out of the motor. Very nice control panel as well. Sorry, the lid locks for the whole cycle but there is both a detergent and bleach dispenser.

If've read some reviews about the aquasmart on Aussie-review sites an apparently they aren't that good. Someone even got the advice to delete the High-effecient mode out of the controls and use the full tub of water to wash. So bye bye energy-efficienty!!
