I'm in need of a couple of fitted queen sized sheets.  I have a lot of top sheets, but have a problem with finding a good quality bottom sheet that will last.  Seems they last 2-3 years and then start to get rips and thin.  I only like 100% cotton, tried everything for 200- 1000 thread count.  Thing is it needs to be affordable.  I recall previous threads of sheets and a set cost over $150, not my budget.

 

I've never been a fan of the poly cotton blends, have a few older sheets and I'd bet that they are now just "poly".  I recall the old percale sheets from years ago, I see Target and Kohls have what they call percale weave cotton sheets, will these hold up better? 

 

My budget is $25-$40 for a bottom sheet only, really don't need a set.  Any suggestions?
 
How about Ikea? Most of my duvet cover sets come from them. Although ridiculously inexpensive and seemingly low thread count, they starch wonderfully, wash beautifully, and last years. They've recently added 100% linen sets and I will be visiting their store to feel them.

My ex has 2 sets of linen sheets that her grandmother literally made by hand. I mean literally, starting with pulling up the plants and finishing with embroidery. IIRC, it was a common group thing girls did in their mid-teens. The sheets became part of her dowry.

 

Weirdly, my ex was not impressed with her grandmother's handiwork. OTOH, *I* thought it was incredible and made sure her grandmother knew it.

 

My only consolation is that my daughter will inherit them one day... assuming her mother didn't throw the sheets away just to spite me. And yes, it would be completely in character for her mother to have done just that.

Check local estate sales for vintage bedding.  Years ago bedding was sold separately, i.e. bottom sheet, top sheet, pillowcases.
 
Matt, check out LL Bean. They sell 100% cotton sheets, fitted or flat separately, I believe for the queen size they are $55.00. And you can't beat LL Bean for quality or customer service.

Macy's

Macy's can have good deals with the right sale and coupons. I have bought 2 sets of 100% cotton percale sheets from their Martha Stewart line. One was around 220 thread count, and I would advise against this one as it is like sleeping on sandpaper, even after a year. The other set is the higher line 360 thread count, and it's much better.

Target clearNCE, TJ Maxx.. I sold some King sized for $ 2 last year... Had so many.. what a bargain that lady got.......
I still have NEW sets of twin Im trying to sell, $5. plus some really nice NEW beautiful dark plaid top twin sized.... everyone want stuff for almost :free"
plus some brand new tablecloths... I sold some brand new kitchen and hand towels heap last year.... I still have more.
cause I used to emb stuff for gifts to people.. so I scoured the clearance every few days at Tarjay, TJ Maxx.. etc. when I lived in the "city". I only lived a bike ride away. LOL
 
oh also

worked for about a week or two in a company that cleaned and etc various furnished apartments. they wanted me to drive that van.... they hurriedly did everthing.
It made me dingy all that hurring and ruhing and driving the interstates......
They only USED FLAT sheets.. they tried to teach me to do it. but I have this mental BLOCK. LOL

Are those also known as "hospital corners". If so, I know how to do them. :-)

In fact, I'd venture that most guys who had nurses in the family never learned any other way.

Another benefit to having nurses in the family: You learn how to completely change bed linens with a person lying in the bed the entire time.

My mom has been using fitted sheets since the 1950's. So that's all I've never known. Currently I buy IKEA fitted sheets, 100% cotton. A single fitted sheet (Queen, 400 thread count) is $22.  
 
How is the feel of the Ikea sheets?

 

I also looked at the LL Bean site's sheets too. 

 

Just hard to decide without feeling them or a very good personal experience from someone I can trust -- that's why I posted here..
 
 

 

 

They feel smooth, and soft. Of course you always have to wash them first, like any other new sheets. And as with most sheets, they get softer as you wash them. Top of the line is their 450 count cotton sateen. Those are the softest, but they only come in sets. Queen size is about $50.
 
 

 

Word to the wise, stay away from those high thread count, bargain priced sheets. They are usually made in China with some pretentious, fake brand name. They begin to pill after only one wash.  Pure garbage.
 
I seond what Louie said about those cheap sheets!

 

<span style="font-family: courier new,courier;">Someone at work was selling them for some kids fund raiser thing.  I felt a little peer pressure to buy a set.  What pure garbage!!!  I washed them and put them on the bed and took them off the next morning.  I gave them away.  They just had a very odd, very cheap feel and I didn't expect the stitching to last to the next wash. The material was so light you could practically see the mattress pad through them.</span>
