New Washer Day this Thursday!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I wish you...

the very best of luck in your purchase of a Maytag wannabe commonly referred to as "Whirltags" despite the fact that what Whirlpool touts it as a being "Commercial" quality model, complete with exposed fasteners to allude to that appearance, is a still a POS.
I've found "Caliente" red a fashionable hue for lipstick on a pig, Whirlpool does as well.
This "machine" uses abysmal suspension rods in which to support the wash drum, the sheer weight of it's contents, coupled with gravity will, and has taken it's toll on such a ridiculously stupid design.
The Whirlpool Corporation is a master con artist, evidently they've duped you as well as thousands others.
You never considered a Speed Queen TC5, have you?

Mixed vs. Power Wash

GELaundry4ever, the PowerWash cycle seems to really work the agitator very aggressively, in what sounds like several different patterns, and at a pretty good speed for each one. Mixed, on the other hand, seems to use it more slowly so it's not driving the clothes onto the base as much.

Does that make sense? I'll probably end up using PW primarily for dog towels, floor mopping pads, and other tough items like that.

For those dumping on my choice of Maytag vs. a SQ TC5 for some reason, I'd point out the following:

This Maytag and that SQ have basically the same warranty, 5y in-home for everything

I prefer the spiral agitator over the vane-style one in the SQ

Most importantly, I got these on a Memorial Day sale so that the whole W+D set was only a tiny bit more than the price at that time on just the TC5.

So there's that.

I did find this video helpful in understanding this particular set. They have made some improvements under the surface, and are willing to back it up with a long, comprehensive warranty.

Can I ask where and what you paid for that machine? I got the TC5 for $1150 16 days ago, free delivery, haul away, and extension drain hose from a local appliance store. They had two of those Maytags left, and were clearancing them for $850 + delivery ($100). Cheaper than Home Depot, where you only get 1 year warranty.

I was looking at the Maytag and GE commercial machines, but I couldn't get past the fact that just a little force on the agitator could make the tubs bang against the cabinet. That and the inner tubs not being real stainless, with plastic bottoms.

"For those dumping on my choice of Maytag vs. a SQ TC5 for some reason,"

Unfortunately, that's to be expected and it's a shame. Speed Queen people can be hardcore like that.

What people don't talk about much with Speed Queen washers is the fact that, yes, they will last a really long time, but they will need a lot of minor, but really annoying repairs along the way. If you're handy and can change a belt on one of those every few years, that's not an issue, but if you're the average Joe who just wants to get their laundry done and not worry about maintenance headaches, I can see the SQ's need for semi-frequent upkeep being obnoxious and a real pain.

Also, most research I've done on the subject suggests that SQ TL's just don't clean all that bloody well. They're designed for commercial environments where people are just trying to get a lot of laundry done quickly. The SQ FL might be a different story, but I don't know much about that.

Lots of people are impressed with the Maytag commercial's cleanability. PinkPower4 on this board has the older version of your machine, and she praises it a lot for the way it washes clothes. I personally have a cheaper machine that is quite similar to yours in operation, same dual-action agitator, same washing action, but yours does have beefed-up components. Others on this board have modern Whirlpool-sourced TL's with the dual-action agitator and they, too, seem to be pleased overall.

No washer on earth is the end-all-be-all of laundry appliances, and don't let anyone get under your skin about not choosing a Speed Queen. Speed Queen is a worthy choice for sure, but so is anything else.

Enjoy your machines!

William8 it was $1549 for the pair but again, it was Memorial Day, and it looks like they are up a bit right now from that price.

You got a great deal on the TC5 - they were running about $1320+ around here at the time I bought my Maytag set. I hope yours serves you well for a long time!

That seems decent

Seems like a decent price for the pair, if that was delivered. Our local appliance store had the SQ marked $1329, just like all the online dealers, but were willing to deal. Probably could have got a few bucks off the Maytag or GE's as well with free delivery, but didn't ask.

They are getting rid of all Whirlpool products. Said they were having trouble getting parts, although if that improves, they will bring them back. Their motto has always been "Its service that counts!" in big neon letters! They have been around since 1945. We have bought almost all our major appliances and TV's there, and they beat the big box stores on price. They dropped TV's about 10 years back :(

You didn't say where you got them? Big box stores still only give a one year warranty, even on the GW's.

I really did like the control panel on the Maytag, looks very heavy duty. And the four water levels. I get four, but by choosing different cycles or deep fill. No need for a dryer, they last a long time, and I don't care if they match, they are in the basement anyways.

I hope we both have long service from these. My old Maytag was 35 years old, I was beggining to think it would last forever...

Good Luck.

New Maytag washer and dryer commercial home set

Hi John I predict you’ll get a lot of good use out of these machines and given the price difference between the Speed Queen TC five washer and dryer pair I think you’ll do very well.

The Speed Queen TC five is definitely a more durable long-term design and it will require less service calls in the first 10 or 15 years. Speed Queen do not eat belts every five years they wouldn’t sell a machine with a five year warranty where they were gonna have to pay for warranty call on any percentage of them.

The Maytag dryer you got is the equal of the Speed Queen and is easily the best dryer ever made that carried the Maytag name it’s a very rugged four roller design. That’s easy to service drys fast and very durable.

The other advantage of the new Maytag commercial top loader is it’s more energy efficient than the TC five with its faster speed spin, so it’s likely even if it doesn’t last as long you’ll save money compared to having the Speed Queen in the long run.

Hanging strut suspension has been used on automatic washers since the early 1970s. It allows faster, spin speeds and much less vibration, compared to a milk stool type suspension systems the other nice advantage of the hanging suspension is if it does wear out or give you problems it’s very easy to just change the four struts after 10 or 20 years if they start to wear or if you have problems, with The damper in milk stool type suspension systems. It will often total the machine to say nothing of being a very expensive and difficult repair.

Enjoy you made a good choice for a top loading washer pair today.

John
