Fix it or Ditch it-According to Popular Mechanics

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

i really want to see how long the current Duet-style washers will last. i think 14 years out of a clothes washer is a very modest expectation, cept for things like belts.

Well, any article that proposes to be a decision tree for whether to fix or ditch an appliance is bound to be limited by space and detail. Some of the information looks useful, but other info - such as a washer agitating in only one direction being solely due to a broken agitator - looks a bit dicey to me. And it ignores the various different methods of agitator removal, instead it says remove the cap, unscrew the bolt, and "voila!". Some good advice, though on electric dryers. Newer ones may require use of a four prong plug, and that can mean extra cost to have the outlet/wiring in the laundry area upgraded.

I wish, though, that instead of "ditch", they'd say, "donate the old appliance to a charity or put it on Craig's List".

unfortunately, promoting a negative association with used appliances is good for the industry. had a talk with a friend just yesterday about him getting a nice used machine. could tell he thought it was beneath him. as long as there are people who are brainwashed by advertising its gonna be an uphill battle saving all the good oldies!

I actually think...

...this is probably an improvement over "the average American's" thought process regarding a broken appliance. At least this article raises the possibility of repairing instead of replacing.

I'm pretty sure most people have a knee-jerk "Buy a shiny new one" reflex when something goes out of whack.

The Ditch

rationales seemed somewhat-to-very replace oriented to me.

However, I am one of those nuts who like to get new appliances and keep them until they are antiques.

ugh

Damn near everything is disposable today! Its really a shame too!
I expect my washer and dryer to last 20+ years. At 4 washloads a week that is possible, although my Amana washer is now chewing up its 2nd belt in 8 years.
Some of it has to do with how people care for stuff too
