My area of south Texas is under flood conditions. My office in town is flooded, and there's no sign of the rain letting up yet.

My thought are with you today. Weather events are so frightening! We had a wind and rain storm here last winter that made me want to go hide in the basement, but there ARE no basements to hide in. Oddly enough, flooding is also a problem here, so we pay attention if there is a lot of rain.
As a business owner myself, I know you must feel a little sick today. I hope everything turns out OK - A good insurance co. perhaps?

Hi Glenn, it's pretty bad here in Bellville as well. Thursday night it started raining nonstop, and I mean raining! Same w/Friday & yesterday as well. Our house is unaffected this time, but water in a ditch was getting precariously close to a house I drove by yesterday morning.

Last June it was even worse. A horrible thunderstorm came our way, and a tremendous downpour with it. One of the storm sewers overflowed and was gushing water into the street. Our driveway was right across from the storm sewer and since it slopes downward, it as well as the front yard took in much of the water in the street. It came up on our front porch and if the rain hadn't let up our house would have flooded from both the garage and our front door! We already had 6-7" of water in our garage, and the power was out. Luckily I didn't have any machines in the garage and moved nearly everything "high and dry", but the mess was HORRIBLE. After it all dried I was able to sweep the "flood dust" out of the garage and hose the driveway and front porch off.

Here's a picture of where the water was on the garage, just to give you an idea; notice how it was still raining...

Water was about 2 inches at the front of the store, but all our servers in the back are in a slightly higher carpeted area and also on concrete blocks (we're prepared!), so they were fine, until the power went out for a couple hours. The carpet is a disaster.

We evacuated my grandmother, she's napping on my couch. My sister and bro-in-law came from Bay City in their truck. The truck's tailpipe was submerged at granny's, water was up to my knees in her yard and carport/utility room (the F&Ps are SOAKED). Her house is a good 5 inches higher, and we're praying it didn't rise much more after we left. We didn't have time to check the separate garage where her car is kept, and the KA pair, and my Superba dishwasher, her lawn mower, etc. Easily could been 18" of water in there. We're prepared for the worse, hoping for the best.

Vehicles stranded all over town. Saw a dumpster floated, tipped on its side and caught in some trees. A car submerged up to the the doors where somebody missed the road and ran into a ditch. People sometimes forget about their pets. I saw a drenched cat sitting in shock on the side of a street, and a dog chained under a carport standing in water.

My street was running like a river, but my house is high and dry.

More than 18" of rain (unofficially) in whatever is considered the "current" period.

It's a mess. Lots of clean-up to come.

Hi Glenn and Westy, my thoughts are sure with you guys, this has to be just terrible. It seems like the South has sure been hit hard this year. Take good care and be safe. Terry

Hi Terry,

I'm alright down here (that picture was from this summer) and the drains are working for now, but I watched the Weather Channel and it said that there was a flood watch in effect in Wharton County (El Campo). Glenn I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

I did have a flood of a different kind; a hose or seal literally blew out on the '82 Kenmore and it spilled all of its water out Friday when I was washing sheets (what a mess...). I'm taking it back next weekend, and if I can't get a refund I'm getting a different machine (there's an older Hotpoint I have my eye on); right now there's no way in hell I'm keeping this one. The worst part is that all the other washers are down in the shed, and bringing either the DD Kenmore or the Maytag up would be next to impossible because of the nonstop rain. I moved the GE in the house Friday and finished the sheets, but there was still a lot of laundry left, which I tackled today. Whatever was too big for the GE (jeans & bathroom rugs) I took to the laundromat and washed in the Huebsch & Wascomat triple-loaders, which had a lot of water/suds drama and were fun to watch.

I'm wondering where all this Texas rain is coming from; hope it clears up in time for Thanksgiving next week!

Glenn, I've dropped you a couple emails and am thinking of you and yours, and your townspeople. I hope someone finds those poor animals too. Scott

Austin, hope it doesn't get any worse in your area. Do you live very far from Glenn? Sorry to hear about your washer and the resultant mess. That was kind of a cool one with the regular (non-spiral) agitator and reciruclating lint filter.

Granny's house is featured on the ABC-Houston Channel 13 image slideshow covering the event! I paged through the pics a couple times, kept coming back to this one, it looked familiar.

If the link works . . .

The trailer house is behind her property. Her house is to the front, little storage shed in back, and garage (on a lot belonging to my parents) to the back and side. There's a field to the side, it ran a crop of soybeans this season, so bunches of dirt and debris from the field ran through the area.

The front yard and carport at the front/right of the house flooded up to my knees. I'll measure the debris lines if I get a chance. No water actually got in the house, not yet, unless the supposed 70% and 90% chance of more rain in the next two days does the deed. Her car in the garage got a little water on the floorboards, but only on the driver's side, not the passenger side. The garage is a smidgeon off-level, maybe a couple inches, but it was enough to make the difference on driver side vs. passenger side.

Bellville Update

It's gotten much worse here. Hard, driving, endless rain; I thought it was over. Storm drain failed (as well as my backyard drain...) and water's going in the garage. Moved nearly everything out; 1" and rising. Started 5 minutes ago. Front porch is literally floating away and at a faster rate; this is where I'm afraid water's going to come in the house, and I don't have a Shop-Vac inside (might have to go out in the rain and get one soon). I'll keep you updated.

Oh My!!!!!

I hope you guy's get through this thing without losing anything! We normally only have to deal with Tornadoes here! Be careful! And Austin don't go out there poking around. That's dangerous! My prayers are with ALL of you!

The flooding has gotten near as Austin here, an hour south of Temple. We've had lots of rain since Fri., but nothing like El Campo. Glenn told me his parents' town (Voctoria) got 6 inches in 4 hours. El Campo has made headlines everywhere. I heard on news yesterday morning 15 inches in 24 hours.

Hope all of you get some relief from the rain! When I lived in Tampa, Fla. back in the '80s, I learned ALL about flash flooding, and torrential rain! Worse yet, it would tend to chase all kinds of critters, snakes and such looking for cover, usually on my front porch!

Hi DADoEs, Im so sorry to see the flood damage. I hope every thing cleans up OK. I know for a fact that you have to worry about mold and mildew after things get that wet.We have had a very wet October, and November looks to be more of the same. They are giving storms and chances for tornadoes tonight. Best Wishes, Your friend, Don

Oh Glen I hope it has let up by now and is receeding. 12 inches of water!!!! was the dryer gas or electric? And did the water cover the motor in the F&P?

How will Granny's house dry out, how does on dry a whole house out after that?? I get 6-7 inches in my basement in the spring but everything as already mounted up higher so it just cleans the floor and drains away. I can't imagine carpeting after that.

Hope you are all dry and safe now.

Jon, water didn't get *in* Granny's house, just the rear storage shed, the separate garage (which is actually on the lot next door that belongs to my parents), and the carport on front of the house. The utility area where the F&Ps are is the rear 1/3 of the carport that was enclosed some years ago. I didn't observe the level directly at the peak, but the debris lines indicate it would have taken two to three more inches to actually get into the house.

We were lucky. Other houses in the neighborhood that are on foundations instead of blocks did flood, as well as many other areas around town. Granny is on the east side of town. A business on the west side suffered 14", and the Middle School on the south side had 8 to 10" and is not expected to be cleaned-up to resume classes until after Christmas.

Yes, the F&P washer's motor was submerged, and I'm sure the dryer's was as well. And both of the KAs in the garage, not to mention my Superba dishwasher that is stored there. There was no water in the F&P dryer drum, but there was water in the KA dryer drum, due to differences in the construction. I don't plan on trying to run the F&Ps for at least a week, if not longer. I'm concerned that the GWL08 was still plugged in while submerged, and there is a degree of power applied to the motor, even when the machine is turned 'off.' I assume the SmartDrive motor is designed with safety features against water in case of a center seal leak, for example . . . but it remains to be seen what are the effects of the water. I'm sure the KA will have an odor from the sound insulation, that water was nasty/dirty coming across from the field next door. I'm wondering about taking off the cabinet and flushing it with clean water?

There was a similar flood some years ago, I think in 1994. It wasn't as bad all over town as this one, but about the same effect on the east side. Granny still had the Design 2000 and the 1972 Whirlpool dryer at that time, and both were submerged to about the same degree as now. Both of them ran perfectly fine after a good wait for drying out. They were still running in 1999 (five years later) when the KAs moved in.

Who makes that F&P Dryer

Hi Daddoes,

I'm sorry to see the mess, we got caught in the Floods in Victoria in 93 and I wouldnt want to go through that again. Again though washer dryer and fridge all worked perfectly once they dried out.

I was wondering if you could post more pics of the F&P dryer as in AU the F&P dryers are what the US classes as compact. (4.5kg)

Is it made by F&P or is it a rebadge?

Good luck with the cleanup

Nathan

Water Damage

Even though not appliance related be sure and have the crawl space under you grandmothers house checked for mold and fungus in a couple of months. Lived in Houston in the 70's and had a rasied house not a slad and had water get in and fungus started on the underneath had to have it sprayed to keep the fungus from eating the wood and making it crumble.

Always sad to hear of the hardships of others---Dadoes--hope things will be o.k. (I thought GE built the F&P dryers?) Hopefully all your appliances will dry out and be fine. Best wishes! -Steve

MY heart goes out to you.. During both hurricanes Francis and Ivan, my home in Asheville, NC was flooded, worse the first time than the second. I am just getting settled back in, but it will be a long time before life is back to normal. have a Roper DD washer and Kenmore Dryer and both work well, and both were flooded. My stove and potable dishwasher wheren't so lucky. I had one of the first D&M 18" portable dishwashers (kenmore) and it was destroyed. So was my 20" propane Tappan Range from the 60's. My freezer surived and my fridge did also, but i lost a good bit of appliance brochures and books, which had been aquired from estate sales and an appliance store that when out of busniess, and most everything else I owned. The most important things to me (my dog, cat, vehicles and myself) survived. My work gave me a good bit of money to replace what was lost and my parents picked up the rest. Again my blessings are with you..

The Fisher & Paykel washer/dryer at Granny's are both working, after standing in around 12" of water for probably 8 hrs.

flooding

Wow, it's like the movie "Day After Tomorrow"!

I see all this stuff happening on TV and in the newspapers and find it hard to imagine being in a mess like that since that kind of thing just doesn't happen in central Los Angeles

So the F & P's are in service and the KA's in storage?
