I've been thinking of getting some rubber floor mats or liners for my car, but I keep forgetting. I track a lot into my car and don't want to ruin my carpet or factory mats.

I've been looking at the WeatherTech liners and mats, but not sure what to get. The liners seem like they'd be what I'm looking for, offer the most protection to the carpet, but they're quite expensive. The mats are cheaper but don't cover the sides as much.

I've also looked at some of the lower cost options like Husky Liner, Max Liner, etc. Also considered just getting the front liners for my car since nobody ever rides in the back. But probably best to get the whole set at once.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience and can chime in if there's something as good as WeatherTech for cheaper.

I have factory rubber mats for my F-150, but have bought the trim-to-fit rubber mats at Costco or Sam's for years.  I'm in and out of the vehicle many times every day and the carpeted mats just don't hold up, slide around and generally look like hell after one winter.  Rubber is much easier to care for, looks like new when washed and I think, safer as your feet don't slide around while driving and entering/exiting the vehicle.

I rarely needed the rear mats in the set of four so I use one to slide below the watery parts of my dishwasher(s) to keep any possible drips contained and away from the wood floor underneath.  Rubber is also a good sound insulator, FWIW.

I like the idea of the custom mats, and they probably will fit well and be more secure.  The price though, ugh.  The mats at the warehouse clubs are usually in the $20 range, and if they don't fit or stay in place to your liking, you can easily ask for a refund.

Hey Cole,

Would these be for your Taurus?

I have a set of front Weather Tech liners from our Lincoln MKS that was just totaled and have the same part # as the Taurus (same car basically).  They are black and only one year old.  Genuine WT like below, I just peeled the sticker off.  We more than likely will be going back to Cadillac to changing to Lexus or maybe Volvo.  I'd let them go for $50 + shipping.  Also have the factory carpet mats in like-new condition from the car.  We're still waiting for insurance to settle everything before we get another car.

Those clear plastic carpet runners that your grandma used to protect her hallway are good. You can cut them to size, they are cheap, and you can see the carpet too.

Yes, or go to

an auto parts dept. or supplier and get nice heavy grey or black floor mats like I did. Not a perfect fit, but they keep the dirt, salt, mud, snow, and slush off the leased vehicles carpeted floor mats.

Greg, that sounds like a good price. My car looks just like that, same colors and everything. I don't really need the rear ones anyway since nobody sits in the back.

Well Cole, we can work out the details if you want them.  They really are nice liners and saved my MKS's carpet from mud last winter.  When Tony got hit and we were unloading the car I grabbed the liners and carpet mats out.  I wish I had grabbed the carpet trunk liner too but didn't think about it.   I'll have to fabricate a cardboard box to fit them since I think I burned the original one but that's no big deal.
