Floor steamer for carpet

My cheapy little floor steamer comes with a "carpet glider" but no instructions on how to use. I tried it a couple of times but I'm not sure if I need to use a pad with the glider or the glider only. Are these supposed to actually clean the carpet or just freshen it?

We had one of those. You don't use a pad with the carpet glider. It's supposed to freshen the carpet, but all it seemed to do was add humidity to the room -- last thing we need in Alabama.
