After no word from Bodum after three e-mails, I called their Customer Service Dept today. He said the person who monitors e-mails is out on medical leave. He found my e-mail in the queue and could see the issues with the silvery metal flaking off.
He said normally the warranty was only one year, but since I was a repeat customer (this was my second Ibis; first one lasted > 12 years), he was willing to replace it on a one-time basis. I have to send him the old kettle and base, with the invoice, and he will send me a new (concealed heating element) unit in return, once he receives the old unit.
Pretty decent customer service, but I had to nudge them a little.
