Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Wow, there's my coffee maker

What year is that catalog, Pete? That yellow and brown automatic drip West Bend is the coffee maker I use 5 days a week.

YES!!

I have an aunt who STILL has her "Apple" clock (see the first pic) and it still works. I would love to have the daisy clock. Love the "flower" stuff. The late 60s-early 70s was my favorite years for decor. I have a set of bed sheets that has enough flowers to make you sneeze. Bring on the Melmac, let's have some coffee.

Get yourselves a copy of Interior Desecrations by James Lileks. It's a book of the worst of the worst of the '70s.

Be prepared to gouge your eyes out.

The Seventies were very sad!

There could be a few items in there that are cool, but the floral patterns, always hated that. We went to New Fiesta ten years ago, because as many of you know, there was a mini-floral revival then too, albeit a different kind. I don't want freaking flowers on my dishware. Yech.

The 70s were the worst in cars too. 165hp Corvettes. End of muscle cars. Bad quality. Few sports cars. Plastic bumpers (yeah those really made our insurance premiums go down didn't they?) more and more stupid laws and auto requirements.

Plus the breakdown of the family unit and acceptance of drugs as "normal".

Yeah, I can forget about that whole period, thank you very much!

The 70s

Well, my childhood was in the 70s so I cherish the music, decor, all the "tasteless" stuff. In fact, if I had a house up north, I'd convert the basement into a groovy 70s pad brown panelling and shag carpet.

The breakdown of the family unit is the absolute worst thing that could have ever happened to this country. Women's Lib. What did you expect. Look at what we have now. Single moms working 2 jobs and supporting multiple kids from multiple dads. Yeah, that's liberation. It was much easier being a housewife.

The 80s didn't suck but the damage was done already.

The 90s sucked big time

The 2000s... notice everything is going retro? Mustangs, Sunbeam Mixmasters, Lava Lamps? That's because everything sucks now and we're trying to get back to 50 years ago.

I was not around during the 50's, but I'm not so certain everything was as wonderful as some might think. Just look at the recent news regarding Rosa Parks and her legacy....just one example. Sure as far as some aspects are concerned, times were great....many families could live comfortably on 1 income, but not all. Perhaps family life was more stable for many. Growing up in the 60's & 70's several of my aunts and friends moms were in the workforce....I don't think they were trying to make a statement, just trying to help with family finances. My mom was a full time homemaker, but I wonder if that would be the case today. I think that was more of my dads choice than hers.

Regarding womens roles during that time, well just look at some of the appliance ads that are displayed here, these ladies are practically making love to their appliances. I'm sure there was excitement with all the technology that was new at the time, but come on, I'm certain many women resented those glorified portrayals of american life.

Single mothers with children out of wedlock with multiple fathers is sad, but I'm not sure that womens lib has much to do with that. Just my opinion

Now, Now, Let the ladies be.....

Women are just as capable and intelligent as men, and since we are a free society, it was inevitable they were going to demand the option to have a place in society other than wives and mothers - and get paid the same as men for equal work. My mom was a "Rosie the Riveter" and later an unwilling "career gal" who walked the picket line in the big ATT strike in the 40's. While she's no bra-burner, she supports what the women's movement has done.

I think that the state of the middle class has a lot more to do with abandonment of the unions than "women's lib". Unions were not/are not perfect, but they are responsible for most of the things we now take for granted in the workplace. Anyone who thinks that corporations are benevolent or truly care about their employees is living in a fool's paradise.

And as far as families go, any "collapse" is due to increased mobility in society, as well as increased affluence. I really don't know what's better: a miserable family unit staying together because of a lack of opportunity, or kids being shuffled between two parents. Personally, I think that too many people get married because it's the thing to do, or because their parents pressured them - that certainly was true of a lot of kids in my graduating class in high school, and all of those kids are on their second or third marriage now.

And as far as single mothers go - there's a million different reasons a woman may be a single mother, and they didn't just "get" pregnant - there was a man involved there somewhere. If we had better schools and universal health care (the lack of which is killing our competiveness) things might be easier for those women.

I have nothing against women working and all that. I never said they weren't as intelligent and capable as men are. But I'm a little too old fashioned I guess. Yes, my mom did work at a laundromat (part of the reason why I'm here) while I was at school but when I was a baby she was a full-time mom/housewife. Once my dad was making enough money to support the family, she quit and became full-time mom/housewife. I applaud the women of today who will have the guts to become a full-time mom and raise their kids right in a traditional family environment (Hello Venus?).
