Now, Now, Let the ladies be.....
Women are just as capable and intelligent as men, and since we are a free society, it was inevitable they were going to demand the option to have a place in society other than wives and mothers - and get paid the same as men for equal work. My mom was a "Rosie the Riveter" and later an unwilling "career gal" who walked the picket line in the big ATT strike in the 40's. While she's no bra-burner, she supports what the women's movement has done.
I think that the state of the middle class has a lot more to do with abandonment of the unions than "women's lib". Unions were not/are not perfect, but they are responsible for most of the things we now take for granted in the workplace. Anyone who thinks that corporations are benevolent or truly care about their employees is living in a fool's paradise.
And as far as families go, any "collapse" is due to increased mobility in society, as well as increased affluence. I really don't know what's better: a miserable family unit staying together because of a lack of opportunity, or kids being shuffled between two parents. Personally, I think that too many people get married because it's the thing to do, or because their parents pressured them - that certainly was true of a lot of kids in my graduating class in high school, and all of those kids are on their second or third marriage now.
And as far as single mothers go - there's a million different reasons a woman may be a single mother, and they didn't just "get" pregnant - there was a man involved there somewhere. If we had better schools and universal health care (the lack of which is killing our competiveness) things might be easier for those women.
