The flying nun was nothing like the nuns we had growing up. Not that there was anything wrong with them - they just had a lot more "ballast" than Sister Bertrille.
Plus, ours were much more the "Sound of Music" type nuns with black habbits - Classic "Penguins" ;-)
I missed its prime time run, but it used to be on in reruns in Omaha after school. Right next to "Bewitched", ironically enough. (My cousin won't let her kids watch "Bewitched" because of the whole "witchcraft" thing - even though she loved it as a kid. Suffice to say we have different viewpoints on lots of things)

Wasn't the silly concept fun? Sister Bertrille weighed only 90 lbs.,and due to her cornette (that stiff-starched wide wing-like hat that the sisters of the Convent San Tanco wore),when the wind was right, she flew.I liked it, I really liked it.

Steve,glad you appreciated it.BTW, the Reverend Mother WAS the Mother Superior.You may be thinking of Sister Jaqueline,played by Marge Redmond of later Sarah Tucker CoolWhip fame, who was to Sister Bertrille what Ethel was to Lucy, and who narrated the show.

the spanish nun that was was loads o' fun
she was Sister Sixto ("Sees-Toe"),the nun who was studying american slang and prone to malopropisms.

I'm still thinking that there were a few of the Shows that had a Mother Superior come to visit the Nuns at the Convent...I don't remember who the Actress was, but I do remember although very few times that a Mother Superior did come to the Convent to Visit...It wasn't the same Actress playing both the Rev. Mother and Mother Superior, they were separate parts...

Hey! GE Swivel, I knew that there was someone else that I had remembered, but wasn't sure of the exact Title or Actress, playing that part. Well, I was 1/2 right at least, I got Mother, Rev. and Superior, but just not the General correct.
I don't have the great memory for names any more, as far as Actor's of certain Shows or Movies, but I can remember a lot of parts that they played, if I've watched it enough or seen them often enough.

Yes,there were visits from the Mother General,most notably the episode "To Fly or Not To Fly" in which Sister Bertrille was worried that she would accidently be air-lifted by the high wind gusts at an outdoor rededication ceremony of the novice nuns.After dedicated food stuffing,she gained 3.5 lbs.of weight,which was not enough to keep her fully grounded,but enough so after being picked up by the wind a few feet, she lost balance and crashed into the bird bath.The weight gain didn't last, somehow, she was down to 89 lbs,one short of her usual.Leaded shoes were frowned on by the Reverend Mother,so the nuns hatched up one final scheme.Sister Jaqueline and Sister Sixto wrapped fishing line around Sister Bertrille's waist and both held their ends taut while she went up to be blessed by the visiting, aged Mother General played by Spring Byington of "December Bride" fame.You see, only the Convent and Carlos knew of Sister Bertrille's flying with exceptions that cropped up here and there. Anyhow, the moment the fishing line slipped,due to being too short, a strong gust of wind,caught by her cornette swept Sister Bertriile over the convent.The Mother General, of course had turned her back at that moment, not seeing where Sister Bertrille went,and said to the Reverend Mother how Sister Bertrille seemed to have disappeared.Sister B was then shown taking a joy ride over San Juan on those stiff tradewinds.Who else remembers this excellent,frivolous episode?

That was another of many Shows that I loved to watch as well, "December Bride" and also "I Married Joan" with Joan Davis and Jim Backus, "My Little Margie" with Gail Storm and Zazu Pits, "Our Miss Brooks" with Eve Arden, Richard Crenna and Gale Gordon and I don't remember the Actor's name that played Mr. Boington {sp}? I also love "Hazel" with Shirley Booth and "Ol' Susanna" with Ann Southern...
I could keep going, but I will quit now. OH!!! Those were the Days of great TV Shows...

Hey Steve,lots of good memories,huh?The washers were not shown in that episode.As far as I can tell-remember,there were 4 episodes that had the Mother General visiting.Only in the episode where Sister Bertrille tries to stay grounded during outdoor ceremonies was the actress Spring Byington used in that role.The other three episodes I recall,but don't know who played MG in them.The 1st of those 4 ,an early episode had the Reverend Mother consider transferring Sister Bertrille to a less turbulant area,such as the "holy city",but the townspeople unite at the Convent to insist she stays.The visiting MG was impressed,as was the Reverend Mother,thus Sister Bertrille stays. In the second season was the Spring Byington episode,then the third season,there were 2 more.One of them shows the nuns all getting new modern habits with a wingless cornette that causes Sister Bertrille to lose her flying ability,thus Carlos stops by the Convent with one of his chicks who was sporting a skimpy outfit so similar to the new habit,that the visiting MG ,aghast at the site, ordered the nuns to go back to the old habits.Then ,there was the episode where old silent screen star Gloria Davenport's films were unvealed,and Sister Bertrille,discovering that Gloria is the now MG,has her visit to talk about it.Sister Bertrille was such a thrill.
