Hi Robert,

One day, when you're tinkering with site functionality anyway, I have a suggestion:

Shopper's Square is our forum for both stuff for sale and wanted-to-buy. I'm seeing a bit of a problem with the latter.

The problem is: So many goodies for sale get posted to SS (a circumstance I would not change for the world) that WTB posts get pushed way down, very quickly. I posted a WTB for some GE range parts day before yesterday, and already there are thirty posts pushing it down. I could "bump" it, but that's kind of rude; many Webmeisters don't like people doing it.

Given that some of us are chasing some extremely rare parts, it seems to me that some sort of system for keeping WTB posts a little more in front of members might be a good thing. The way things work presently, a member who has the part someone is looking for would have to see a WTB post before it gets buried, which happens pretty fast.

Yours for a biggerer and betterer AW....
 
If the number of WTB ads is usually small, another option might be to hardcode them at the top of the thread list in SS. As many sites do with so-called "sticky posts" (posts considered important enough to keep at the top of a discussion list). It would eliminate the need for subgroups. But if the number of WTB's is usually more than small, imo Allen's suggestion is a much better one.
 
How about this:

When posting in SS, you have to specify something in a new Sort field. Either the US State, or Wanted, or something. Then the top of the SS page has a spot where you can enter the state or Wanted, and the forum would only show listings matching.
 
For me, it would be just nice to know what era the appliances in S-S are from....

Nothing against antiques, just like to see my favorite decades more easily, and dismiss Monitor Top Fridges, Freezers with Bank Vault-style Storage Compartments, Ranges with multiple Chest-level Ovens & External Gas Pipe plumbing, and Washers with Wringers...!

I think it's fine the way it is. If the wanted posts are stuck at the top, I predict that everyone will soon create one and the entire first page will be wanted items. The easiest solution if to bump the post weekly.

I don't see how the forum could be filtered. So many sellers have now idea what they have. Honestly, sometimes we don't know either. As much as I would like to disregard anything made in my lifetime, I don't see a filter working well.

My only frustration is vague thread titles. Sometimes time is short. If I don't look at new posts right then, I often forget for a very long time. This is mainly an issue in the Shoppers forum.

I'm trying to follow that logic. People (including AW members) are either looking to buy something or they aren't. If you're saying members will post just to see their names on top of a forum list, imo that's doubtful at least on this site.

The other half had one other idea: a hardcoded title prefix (e.g. "WTB: ") for all WTB posts. It would or should make searches for these ads a lot faster.
 
I agree with Travis to a certain extent...

The problem I see with all these ideas is that we are expecting the membership to correctly categorize all of their shopper square postings.  As it stands now I'm constantly moving threads between forums on a daily basis, they were originally posted in the wrong forum because the thread creator didn't understand or didn't want to take the time to think about the selection choices or simply made a mistake.  If we add another layer to that it will cause more errors which will only add to the confusion.  
 
I could add a "wanted to buy" forum, but if it is only used occasionally, I suspect people wont read it as often as the other forums which could only make matters worse and the WTB threads would go unread by the majority.

With as busy as aw.org is and with new members coming on board, I really don't see a magic bullet solution to this issue.

I think we all want to find something, whether it be a specific appliance or a part for a project. If the Wanted posts became a sticky at the top of a forum, I think there would be pages of them.

I do agree with Robert about a Wanted forum being less used than the rest.
 
Thiinking about parts needed and/or donor appliances....

It would be nice to know what decade all CL appliances are from - and label accordingly. I try to consolidate,and will work harder to do that where possible - I'm also posting less, even though there's plenty of other postings that push the other postings down.

I was thinking - it would be nice to have a category to post needed parts and entire machines. That way, a posting like danemodsandy or anyone else can be seen immediately and won't be so easily pushed down and out of the category. It could have subcategories, within something called "Parts and Appliances Bin" ...and sub-categories of washers, dryers, stoves, etc. could be chosen, before posting the available or requested part. It provides an entire area where the need remains til filled, and with sub-categories, it brings a nicely organized access point, without mixing it within for sale items. That's not to exclude a potential small cash exchange for the donor unit, but it would be linked to someone needing parts from that appliance.

I find the way that you tend to group your finds by product type with a corresponding title thread very useful. As a Brit I have no hope of buying any of this stuff but I do find your posts very interesting as they demonstrate the very wide variety of diverse products that have been available over the years. I am sure many others would do so too, especially as it highlights items which could be in their own area which they might like to purchase.

So please, post away to your heart's content and that your time and energy permits - it is appreciated - I actually quite missed your posts while you were away a few weeks ago

Vacbear58 - Al, you are way too kind, but thanks for mentioning. I'm probably not going to be posting as much in the next few weeks, also ; I damaged my right bicep lifting boxes, and will start therapy tomorrow- no surgery. It won't prevent me from posting, so ...I'll do my part to contribute. Thank you again, for the compliment. I enjoy viewing the other's postings, too (especially with photos).
