The Wham-jam

This could have been a most memorable marketing campaign and a big hit:

Wham, Jam, Thank you Ma'm... (set to music, of course)

My bad.

I thought most of thoese types were 3/4 H.p..Does the grinding elements look just like the Vikings?I have used the Jaminator button on mine it is a great feature to have.I have heard the ones that don't have it are a nightmare to get unjamed at times. That is a NICE disposer VERY nice indeed thanks for the Pic...

3/4 hp disposers

Were introduced by Anaheim-Tappan about 1978...

The Kitchenaid pictured above was the #1 rated disposal in 1977 by Consumer Reports.

What exactly does the WHAM-Jam button do?

The wham-jam breaker would reverse the turntable very quickly, almost vibrating back and forth to loosen any jams. It worked very well. Viking took over the KitchenAid line.

Well I have a Viking which looks Just like that but its a 1 H.p.Viking bought the rights from Whirlpool sence Kitchenaid is owned by them. They do Jam but mine has only done so at starting up.The Viking has a load sensor in it and if your grinding a real heavy load it will stop and reverse instantly to prevent jams.I am sure yours has it also the same system mine has.I will tell you this they are kinda slow at grinding but you will never haved to worry about clogs the undercutters on them are great. If it does Jam turn it off then back on that will normaly clear it up if its Auto-reversing I can't tell from the Pic.That is a Wonderful disposer its a shame they don't make things like they used to.

With one of those KA-Viking machines it could be VERY EASY to jam one if you stopped it while the unit is still shredding-material could be caught between the serrated flywheel and the shred ring. That is why the "WHAM-JAM Breaker"that vibrates the flywheel to dislodge the particle jamming the flywheel-If you used one of these let it shred COMPLETELY before shutting it off.You can listen to it while it runs and hear when the shredding sounds stop. Then its safe to turn the disposer off and water.I learned this from a unit a neighbor had.He originally jammed it-and it took several shots of the "Wham Jam Breaker" to free it-and the Wham Jam heats the motor of the unit quickly.

The Wham-jam button Vibrates the grind-wheel back-and-forth 7000 times a Min.It also says with 4 times the power than normaly.I have took mine apart and jammed it with a some wood and it does work very well but it must use TONS of Power cause the Lights Dim and like flash a little when its engaged.Tolivac is right it heats up the motor BIG TIME I have even had it to throw the breakers in my house.

I beleive the "Wham Jam Breaker"feeds DC pulses to the motor-half wave rectifies the AC-and the pulsating DC makes the motor rotor vibrate isntead of turn-and yes it would use a lot of power-the pulsing DC heats the motor windings quickly. It is drawing more power than usual.
