I currently own a 1985 GE Filter Flo that I bought brand new in 1985. A few years ago (7-10 years ago), it started leaking water out from underneath during the drain cycle. It wasn't too bad at first but the amount increased the last couple of years that I used it. Otherwise, the washer was still working fine. I couldn't find anyone who was willing to work on it though. I found this forum about 4 or 5 years ago and it sounded like I would only be able to get parts off of another old washer, so I ended up buying a brand new GE top loader. I kept the 1985 one though on the off chance that I could eventually get it fixed.

Yesterday, I found a GE Filter Flo for sale. It looks like it's the same year as mine. It's at a small appliance sales and repair shop, owned by a man who's been doing appliance repairs for 35 years. He told me that it works really well. The pictures look decent. He's asking $200. I haven't been looking for Filter Flo's for sale for a while, but this is the only one I've seen. The main drawback, however, is that it's 5 hours away from me. I'm used to traveling for dog shows, so the distance doesn't bother me that much, but I'm wondering if I should take the chance and get it, or if I should wait and see if I can eventually find another one. Also, should I give up on getting mine fixed?

BTW, I also still have the 1985 GE dryer that goes with the washer. I've only had it worked on twice and just needed a new belt each time. I think it currently needs another new belt and just haven't gotten it replaced yet. I can't remember if I ever had the washer worked on.

Thanks for any insight or advice you can give!

Maybe I need to rephrase my question since no one has responded. How often do any of you see a FF show up for sale? I am thinking it's random chance to find one at an estate sale or in a local ad for sale. For people who collect these, how do you find them? Do you think it's worth driving 5 hours to get this one, or should I take the chance that I'll find another one someday? Are there people who know how to repair the leaking issue or should I just send mine to the landfill?

I would really like to get some opinions from people with a lot more experience than I have! Thanks in advance!

Depends on the location, out in the boondocks vintage machines are usually few and far between.

$200 is a little steep, lid is rusting and it looks like its got some mileage on it.

I've seen FF's in better condition for less money but I'm in a densely populated region.

5 hour drive would be a deal killer for me unless it was in mint condition.

I would at least want to know where yours is leaking before giving up on it. Yes it is pretty hard to find someone to work on one these days. I don’t see them very often anymore. The one pictured was built in approximately 1991. I am highly biased as a collector and with the knowledge to repair them if I find one I want I usually get it. But I think in your case you should see about finding out the condition of yours first.

Just go for it first, then take the advice that has so nicely been offered. Who knows, you might just end up with Two excellent running machines.

Why not combine this with a road trip?

Maybe you need to get away from where you are for awhile and it's an "excuse" to see another part of the country.  Although there is not much excitement in Iowa.
