Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Good washer

My in-laws have one of these Whirlpools and it has served them very well. A lot of these machines seem to end up at the curb over an $8.00 coupler. Amazing - what a waste. I changed the one on the KitchenAid that we had in about 15 minutes.

Peter nice find...My friend had that machine the only thing that was different was it had those magic touch buttons in the middle.
You can't bet the reliable DD.
Congrats on your whirly.

question please?

i got it inside and took off the cabinet. that was interesting in itself. the entire cabinet removed from the base.

anyway. how do i remove the motor from it's mount so i can replace the broken motor coupler? i have removed the pump and i see it has 2 clamps on each side of the motor. will removing the screws on these clamps remove it or do i have to remove the 4 bolts that appear to hold it to it's mounting clamp?

here are some pics.

thanks for your comments above and that video was great too!

top cover is dirty

but will clean up easy enough. my portable whirlpool direct drive i got from melvin (supreme whirlpool) had the same dirt. the top of the outer tub has a ring of dirt too but all lower outer tub surface is clean. makes sense since this is where the top of the water line is.

to remove the motor just remove the 2 screws and unclip.
The 4 rubber bushings that support the motor tend to sag a bit
over time, affecting the alignment of the motor coupler,so i
might modify that arangement a little on my'93DD when i get
around to the reassembly of that machine. I noticed your
washer has different tub hole pattern than mine, yours looks
to be a '98 judging by the motor date code.I have heard some
of the later DD machines have a "neutral drain"feature but
i do not know what years.

yet another coupler style

that is the 4th different design of coupler i have seen
though it is pretty close to the style of replacement i
bought. As far as the rubber bushings i would just turn them
180* and reinstall.

Neutral drain DD

Yes - our 2000 model year KitchenAid DD washer had a neutral drain. However, we had a friend who has a "Design 2000" Whirlpool which was a very early DD machine and I think it was a spin drain.

Direct drive Whirlys have been of the neutral drain design for a very long time. I have a copy of service manual L-52 that covers them, dated 1985, saved by the dealer where I worked in the late 70s to early 80s.

There shouldn't be a need to reuse the rubber coupler bushing, a new bushing is included with replacement couplers.

indeed,a 1983DD i examined was spin drain and i am pretty
sure my '93DD is also spin drain. From what i understand from
a post on here a while back,on the neutral drain machines
the motor reverses direction to pump out, stops for a moment
then restarts in the same direction to engage spin, and that
a bad coupler with too much lash often causes malfunction
of this feature.
