I have a 4 year old Whirlpool basic dryer that started making a rhythmic clicking sound when running. The sound happens about every 2 seconds and seems to have two parts. The dryer seems to work fine other than this sound. Any help appreciated.

Some Whirlpool-built 29-inch dryers, recognizable by the top-mounted lint trap, make a rhythmic thumping sound when running. Mine does, and it's only a few months old. It's about a two-second pause, then two quick thumps. From what I understand, some drums have more pronounced seams and that sound is the seams going over the rollers as the drum rotates. You describe the sound as more of a clicking, but I wonder if this is what you are hearing.

Thanks for responding. Here is a link below to a youtube video of the sound.....It just started doing this yesterday....owned the dryer for four years. Hope the video works.

That sounds more like a foreign object is stuck in there somewhere and is making contact with a part of the dryer whenever the drum rotates. Perhaps a coin or something got stuck under one of the drum baffles and it's clicking whenever the drum comes down to complete the rotation. Or there's something stuck in a way where it makes contact with the rollers? Hopefully someone who knows more about the mechanical side of these machines than I do will be along shortly to shed some more light. Glenn/DADoES or John/combo52, any ideas?

Seems to be at or near the rate of drum rotation.  No foreign objects inside the drum?  Maybe the drum belt is split/torn and is flapping against the cabinet?  Raise the machine top for observation while it runs?

found the source of the problem

Took the top of the dryer off and found that some rubber was coming apart on the rubber that goes around the center of the drum....Took some pictures to illustrate. I cut off the loose rubber and the sound stopped.

That "rubber" is the drum belt.

It may break at some future point.

There are usually, although not always, contributing factors to the belt deteriorating like that, typically the tension/idler pulley.  Have you noticed any squealing/squeaking noises?

It's reasonable/OK to continue using the machine until further symptoms or problem occurs.  Both parts (belt and idler) are reasonable cost and an easy DIY fix for a moderately-skilled DIYer.

will need to replace the rubber belt...still works but is weakened. The rubber is very dry and somewhat fragile. Wondering if the rubber is weakening from age or if there may be other issues.

No, haven't heard any other noises; no squealing etc. The site doesn't allow new
members to post more than once per half hour, so am not answering as quickly as i'd like. Guess i'll buy a new pulley...Live in Georgia so very humid and hot...don't really use the dryer more than once a week or so...

Failing dryer belt

I would plan on replacing that belt almost immediately. It’s not gonna last long as you can see. It’s not a very robust belt and with half of it gone it won’t last long.

It would be really helpful to post model number when you ask a question like this there are several different whirlpool dryer designs.

Replaced Belt

John,

I replaced the belt and it seems to be working fine. The Mod # is WED4815EW1, and the serial # is MX3832721. The fraying was on the outside edge of the belt, facing the back of the dryer. I couldn't see anything obvious that might have caused the fraying. Have gone through a few dry cycles and checked the new belt and no fraying.

Push nut for roller

I bought a full repair kit with the tension pulley, two rollers, 4 clips that hold the rollers in place and one push nut. It appears only one of the rollers needs a push nut, the one with the metal brace..the other roller doesn't need a push nut. Does anyone know if that is accurate?
