Free Kenmore Combo and 55 Frigidare Custom Imperial dryer

Hello,

After a long while in my grandfathers shed I finially went and picked up the couple of machines that I hadn't integrated into my small collection before my life changed and I became a dad! So up for grabs is a 70's gas kenmore combo and a 55 filtrator.

Alan Jacobsen has dibs on the combo but if hes not interested its up for grabs. As you can see from the pics both machines are in "Meh, to OK shape". The combo came from a rather gross house, and I started giving it a major muckdown. I never plugged it in but the lady who had it before said it was working.

As for the filtrator, I bought it from someone in this club to match my 55 washer, but I have a 58 pink filtrator that I've got paired with the 55 washer in hopes that someday it will find its mate. Both machines are free, no gaurantees on either, as I've never ran either one.

What a great offer!

Both machine look to be in great shape
The Combo is wonderful! The drum and even boot are in great shape.
You can actually see that he needs to be broken down to take all of the lint out from the back of the drum looking at the pictures. This could be the only issue with this machine!
It would be a fun machine since I am partial to the gas versions of these combos.
Fun.
Hopefully someone will save them both.

Wow, I didn't know Kenmore made a combo. That will be one cool machine if it can be rebuilt, which I have no doubt can be.

They are a very cool in design.
I have had the chance to use a few of them still in operation here in Atlanta, and the owners would not give them up. They took my number however.
Several club members had these in operation, and an even older Whirlpool versions that you can check out on "See it Wash" link that Robert has provided.
Robert has a great Whirlpool that is up and running in this appliance link. His is electric and he has totally took it apart and put it back together. I think the culprit was lint in fact.
It is a wonderful machine no doubt!

I'm glad folks are interested in the combo...I was hoping someone would want both. I can't imagine there would be a big difference in shipping. I think most of the problem is I don't want haul a nice 55 filtrator to salvation army...Isn't that like automatic club banishment if it comes to that?

I've seen Robert's video of the Whirlpool Combo, just wish it was longer. Robert, could you make a longer video of the combo? It wasn't until I joined AW that I knew combos were made that long ago.

It's good to see an old Sears combo being saved. The model you have was built the 29th week of 1971. It is one of the later combos that they sold. These units were plagued with many service problems over the years but in my opinion their demise was the lack of proper service and training by Sears technicians. These machines were very complex but ahead of their time. At one time I had two that I used as daily drivers. I am one of the former techs that serviced them when they were on the market. They were more of a hobby for me at the time and I think I was the only tech in my unit that enjoyed working on them. If I can be of help please feel free to contact me. I may be rusty but I understand the Balance mechanisn system,speed changers,etc, and have replaced many hubs on these units.

Kenmore combo

Hi, Whatever you do,before you move this style combo,make sure you open bottom service panel and unlock balance system.if you do not,you will probably regret it(it can break)!!! Kenmoreman, tell us a bit more. What was different about them?

They actually had an air compressor that along with the balance mechanism could perfectly balance the load before it went into high spin. It would speed up and slow down all the time using the ballast tanks on the drum to make for a perfect spin with no shaking. It was an amazing design. The screw on the balance mechanism (as a previous member correctly stated) must be loosened before moving the unit and tightened after setting it in place. The unit had a single foot in the center of the bottom if I recall that makes them difficult to move the unit. They are also very very heavy. They had a many as three pressure switches. The timers on the later models were push button with a mechanism with a locking pin very similar to the later Lady K top loaders. Even though I had two of these units they were still often a challenge to diagnose. Lint on the balance mechanism arm for example could make the machine shake like crazy or not allow it to go into high spin. Thats all I can say for now without a specific question. Best to all!
