SoftMaker, a German company, is giving away a free office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, etc). "FreeOffice" is available for both Windows (even 2000, I think) and Linux (what I use). And for every download, they are making a donation to charity.
The catch is probably that they are hoping that you will love the free version so much that you'll cough up the money for the full version.
I haven't had much of a chance to try my copy yet. But in the past, I was impressed with the excellent support for Microsoft Office documents. Note: one limitation with the "FreeOffice" is that they don't have write support for Office 2007 formats. There is read support for Office 2007, however. And there appears to be full read/write support for RTF, OpenOffice/LibreOffice .odt, and plain text. There is support for Word 95, which may not be supported by Microsoft Word anymore!
As I say, I haven't tried my copy, but I think it's worth trying.
Link to their web site below. The relevant section is the "Load and Help". Note the offer expires very soon--12/24. t tried my copy, but I think it
