I have an upstairs utility at my house even though I have a full basement, so its quite nice to be able to have my vintage appliances upstairs where they can always be appriciated. My utility room connects from the kitchen to the master bathroom, which goes straight through to the master bedroom. I live in a ranch home built in '64, its pretty much untouched and all original so having nice vintage appliances helps give the house its original character. I cleaned up and waxed my floors and repainted the utility room so now the 1-18's are in a nice freshed up room. I really enjoy these machines and am fortunate I was able to find the matched pair from '73 at an estate sale last summer.

Very nice looking set as well as a nice looking laundry room.
I remember that pickled woodwork from homes in the Chicago area from about 59-66 or so. I don't know what that color is called buy on of my parents house had the same and my mother always said it was "pickled" woodwork.

You'll definitely enjoy that 1-18 set.

That set fits in really well with the style of your home. Nice set, and lucky find! I love the control panels!

My, We're in a Pickle

Pickled wood is rubbed with paint pigments to acentuate the wood grain and can be any color.  Limed Oak was very popular in the 50's when wood was actually whitened with lyme. Today the two are used interchangeable since its easier to use pigments than mix up a lime paste or place glavanized nails in vinegar to transfer the galvanizing to the vinegar making a gray slurry.

Laundry room and machines look fantastic! Would love to see more pics of the house.

Just like the set my mom had!

My mom bought the same exact washer and matching gas dryer in 1971. The advertisements stated "Frigidare Reinvents the Washer!" Showing off the new 1-18 capacity, the Jet Action Agitator, Circle Spray fill and spin-spray, bed of nails lint filter, perforated inner tub (better sand removal claimed over previous washers), the detachable console to make servicing easier, removable front panel for easier servicing most mechanical parts (motor, transmission and pump) easier. The set was avocado here too. We loved the washer but the dryer required a service call at least once every 6 months after about 5 yrs of use, the gas igniter would require replacment, or filiing to remove built up deposits of something, I wasn't allowed near the repairman or to talk with him when he came to the house. Mom just wanted him to just "get it fixed and go." The man we gave the washer to lost it during hurricane Rita. It was still in use until that time. She replaced the Frigidare with a Maytag set in 1988 which she is still using today and still new looking.

Nice set! I also have an avocado 1973 Frigidaire washer Dryer set but they are the 24" GMini which I had to stack one above the other like the laundry center because I was lacking space, (it's a good thing that the dryer controls are on the front panel otherwise they would be almost impossible to reach!). I also have a newer 1-18 set just beside them and I really like them.

And for those who complain about the noise of the 1-18 washers, I can tell you that they are less noisy during agitation (and during spin) than my two previous Inglis/Whirpool direct drive washers with dual action agitators...

Doug, I've always wanted to see people integrate Avocado colored appliances into their interior design. Difficult finish to work with. You've succeeded brilliantly! The warm tints and grays of those rooms work really well with those retro colors. You could have sold many Avocado appliances for GM with that setup.

Thank you all for the very polite and positive comments. Its great to have a place to hang out with fellow collectors and those who appriciate vintage appliances.
