INTERESTING!

So are these top-burner/element controls eletronic, menchainical or a hybrid?

Perhaps this is worth repeating:

MEHCHANICAL "OFF" (hard power-down)switch. Are you listening manufacturers?

BINGO! This would be me.

My 2002 Frigidaire range is model PLEF398ACA and the serial number begins with VF144...

Although.....the listed model in the recal is PLEF398AC, not ...ACA.

I'll call my local dealer and find out what's up. I've never had a problem with my range---cooktop or oven---but after my experience with Smoky The Maytag And It's Spontaneously Heating Element, I'm not taking any chances.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Jim, for the heads-up!

Not to worry Togs, there is a fire extinguisher about 4 feet from the range. This will do no good when I'm not at home, of course...

An Aside: Someday I'm going to learn to proofread my goddamn posts!!

recall

Its (no apostophe)

I went to www.smoothtoprangerecall.com, typed in my serial number and it confirmed I am part of the recall.

In answer to your question, Togs, I think they're mechanical controls. You have to push them in to turn them on, then they pop back out when you return them to the OFF position. There is a digital readout in the little window, but the next model down has the same controls minus the digital display.

Someday I'm going to learn to proofread my posts!!

I stopped years ago because I just got tired of trying to read it all before I hit "send". Toggles quit hassling me about it quite a while ago. I only proofread furry bears lol

Can you see what the problem is?

Here is a paste from the recall web page:

The model and serial number can be found by opening the range drawer at the base of the unit.

Sold at: Sears and other national chain and independent retailers nationwide from June 2001 through August 2009 for between $1,000 and $2,500.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled ranges immediately and contact Frigidaire or Sears to schedule a free repair.

And the problem is: Manufactured in: United States

I typed my serial # in and found out that my range was not part of the recall. Dodged a bullet there. Now if Electrolux/Frigidaire would have recalled my TOL Frigidaire dishwasher that had a vent control malfunction and ended up melting everything plastic inside the tub, including parts of the tub.

I stopped by my local Frigidaire dealership today and the owner (who is also the serviceman--it's a tiny, tiny town, kids) hadn't heard a thing about this recall.

I printed out the four-page recall notice for him. I've know him for years, and he knows I'm interested in appliances, but I think he was embarrassed to learn about the recall from a customer.

He was on the phone to Frigidaire as I was leaving...and a beautiful TOL Maytag front-loading pair on pedestals was trying very hard to follow me out, LOL!

The owner's wife (who is the bookkeeper and works the floor) had stuffed the washer full of big, colorful bath towels to show how large a load it could handle.
When someone shows interest in one of the Maytags on the floor, she pulls out this huge laundry basket of towels piled to high-heaven, and loads them into the machine. I love mom-'n'-pop stores.

Eugene:

I glad I was able to help, and sorry to read that you are part of the recall. I signed up to receive recall notifications at U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, when I found out that my crock pot that I had been using for years had been recalled by GE. Whenever I receive one about appliances I try to post it here ASAP.

Recall

Just to say Thanks Jim!!!!!!!!! on the notice. I printed out the recall notice as one of my sons and his wife have the Frigidaire smooth top and yest it is on recall. Would not have know about this at all.
