Hey all-- Curious if anyone can advise on this--in the 1963 Frigidaire TechTalk manual, they reference Frigidaire Blue permagum #5874746 as the only product to use for resealing when reassembling interior of the freezer. "Do not substitute"….yadda, yadda. Is there a modern universally compatible permagum any of you would feel ok using in case I don't locate "the real stuff"…? If so, where is it sold(besides online)? I may just have a run up to Lowe's and see what they say...

Back then, there really was not much in the way of sealants that were semi-permanent like permagum. Frigidaire used it to seal up the Filtrators and by the time we got them they leaked like the Titanic because it eventually dried out. For the seals on the Filtrators where it was not necessary to ever open them again, I used silicone seal. I don't know if you will need to go into the parts of the freezer you are putting back together. If not, you could probably use silicone seal. If this is an area you will need to reopen and don't want to cut with a blade, there is a product called Moretite weatherstripping and caulking cord. I use it around the gaps in the panels around my window AC units. It is made in the USA by Thermwell Products, Co. Inc, Mayway, NJ 07430 & Sparks, NV 89431.

It is sold in a roll of about 7 ribs so you can use strips just as wide as you need. It does not harden so it can be removed if necessary.

I like the no-nonsense, unpretentious statement on the back, "Can also be used as gasketing material, seam seal, crack filler, sound deadener, insect barrier and general plugger-upper.

I bought mine near all of the air conditioner-installation products at Home Depot many years ago. This year HD did not even sell AC units and I could not find this near the painting products so if you can find a hardware store, that might work. Otherwise you probably will need to go online.

What's doin' with your move?

Tom--thanks!

Agreed with you on the bit about Permagum being a sole option back in those days--I've seen other stuff in recent years which (in my mind) would be every bit as ok to use--if not better.

I primarily didn't want to use anything which may have a chemical make-up which would compromise the plastic of the freezer liner panels. Probably nit-picky of me….All I have done this week is remove the freezer floor of the unit just to check on a couple of things for security's sake. I also removed the fan shroud at the same time--noticed that most of the OEM permagum had gone dry and fallen away, so I'd just like to reseal the whole thing as it has been 52 years untouched!

The move is….on hold. Looks like we're staying put for at least a year or two more….MY wish is to head to Washington State when the time comes, so we'll see if that happens. Got to give it all really hard thought as at this age, major moves aren't as easy as they are when you're a 25 year-old!
