Just when I thought I had it all working perfectly. I put on the back panel and OVERHEAT! It works perfectly fine with it off and it’s almost like the airflow is being stifled.
Does anyone have any ideas? Should the over heat sensor be insulated or what in the world else could it be?!
This not the filtrator, it just has a normal vent. I know many or most of the survivors are the filtrators, but this one isn’t and it should be simple! 😡

1950s FD Vented Dryers

I never saw one of these that worked well, they always seemed to have poor air-flow through the heater box and generally ran hot and dried slowly.

They also had lots of problems front & rear drum bearings, idler pulley bearings, motors and blowers.

All that said I think you can probably get it to work and get some use out of it as long as you are not expecting to use it much, I know that you want to keep it because of the cool design.

I would probably install a much lower wattage heater element, on a lot of 60s FD dryers I would install one GE dryer element to bring the heater wattage down to about 2,600 watts which really helped a lot to prevent over-heating problems and wiring problems in the heater circuit.

FDs Filtrater dryers from the 50s were much more durable dryers but not without their problems either.

The airflow is good but the back panel must slow it down just enough to over heat it. It won’t run more than 5 minutes on normal heat, but dries fine on gentle with the back panel off.
The motor isn’t overheating at all, it’s the high temp on the heater element. I’m actually surprised at how few air openings are on it. Maybe the GE 2600 watt is the best option. Pulleys, bearings and everything else are all fine!

I’m off Old Norcross rd in Tucker. Moved here from NJ about a year and a half ago!

Do you have a link to the GE element? I get a bunch of results when I google, so not sure which one is the right one.

Lots to pick from!
