Frigidaire electric range question

I have a classic Frigidaire Compact 30 electric 30" drop-in range. One of the large burners doesn't get hot for settings from warm to medium. It works fine (both elements) on high. I replaced the element but that didn't fix it.

I would like to open the thing up to look at the control for that burner, to see if it needs cleaning or replacing. But I haven't been able to figure out how to open this thing up.

Is the top supposed to be able to be lifted up from the front?

Re: Drop-In Stove:

Rich,If I'm assuming correctly, are the Controls on the front of your Stove? You might have to open the Oven Door and look at the top of the Door Frame, above the Oven Opening. There might be some Screws up there, that are holding the Burner Top of the Stove tightened down, rather than an easy-lift up Burner Top, then the Control Panel might also have some Screws located somewhere around that area, after hopefully being able to lift the Burner Top up.

If that isn't a correct assumption, then possibly and hopefully someone else might know how the Burner Top area comes up to access the Control Panel. Good Luck, let us know what you find out and what works for getting your Burner operating to its fullest again. It might even be the Control itself either needing something done to it, as indicated by you before, or it might need to be replaced, with unfortunately quite an expense.

What's the model number of your range, Rich. I'll see if I have the Frigidaire Tech-Talk on hand and scan some info for you. It does sound like you have a switch problem...

Yes, the controls are in the front of the stove, on a stainless panel. The model number is RBE533. S/N 41CM963(6?). Hard to make out the last number due to overzealous cleaning from previous owner.

I looked behind the oven door, and under the control panel, and I see three phillips screws that might be holding the control panel down. Additionally, there are two blanked off holes, that might also have something to do with the top release. I didn't try to remove the screws until I find the circuit breaker and shut off all power to the unit. It's rather chilly on the enclosed patio right now - strong winds are ventilating it pretty good.

From around 1975? I'll look it up tonight and see how to crack into it - dashing off to work now - but it sounds like you're on the right track.

It looks more like a '60's appliance to me, or maybe even late 50's. You decide .

I have a box with a lot of range switches in it - not sure what all is there, but I'll be glad to check for you. Once you find the offending part, check for a number on it...

It Sounds Like.....

Sounds like a wiring problem to me. It could be time for the unit to be rewired with some modern 12 guage glass insulated range wire available at your local appliance parts store.

Once I am able to lift the control panel and top, I'll take a look at the wiring. It may well be time to replace it.

I also need to repalce the plastic face on the time/clock which sits to the rear left corner of the unit. And maybe get the clock to work again.
