Hello to all,

I have a Frigidaire model FPI170TS refigerator.
Last Sunday the defrost fan stopped working.
We unplugged the machine for a 1/2 hour plugged it back in still no blower fan operations.
Unplugged the machine. Tried the next morning still no fan.

I called a tech.
Wednesday (3 days later) he came out took one look at the outside and said that the Fridge is not worth fixing.
Now my experiance is that this refrigerator runs like a CLOCK!
I told him to continue.
He removed the floor of the freezer, the foam above the plate and the plate over the chiller coil and told me to plug it in.
Sure enough the blower fan did not turn. He then said that fan or no fan it should already be getting cold inside.
I told him that my experiance with that fridg is that it taks a long time before the machine stabilizes after being off 3 days.
I then reached in and spun the fan with my finger and it started.
He did not want to replace the motor so what we agreed to do was place the plate the foam and the floor back in without screwing them in to see if the fridge returns to the normal operation I know it to have.

Now the machine had been unplugged for 3 days. At the 1st deforst cycle (which occured 5 hours after the service call)the freezer air temp went from 60 during the service call to 30 degrees F. Eight hours later at the next deforst the freezer temp was about 2 below zero F and the fridge air was about 38 degrees(measured with a thermometer in a jar of water). After that the refigerator is cycling between deforst cycles like normal and working just fine and has been working normally for about 3 days.(Still empty.)
But here is my problem.
Nothing is screwed together in the freezer area. Now I know that the motor should still be replaced if it stopped in the 1st place. So is that something I can do myself and what cautions should I know before attemping the replacement?
The other question I have is if I just want to use it with the motor that is already there can I put weight (refill with meat etc)back on the floor of the freezer without the shelf being screwed into the sides of the machine without damaging the coil or other parts of the machine to see how it goes? If I do screw the plate and the floor back in what is the working tempeture of the plastic floor and rubber flap around the floor that conseals the screws so that I don't crack or break anything at zero degrees? Do I have to bring the refridgerator back to near room temp before making the attachments? How tight should the screws be?

Any advise on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
John

There is no "defrost fan". The evaporator fan in those can be replaced, but it can be a beech to do, especially if it one of the ones they used a screw and a nut to hold it in place. You have to remove a few screws that hold the evaporator coil in place, and then lift the coil out of the way, without damaging it, or the attaching tubing, or the glass heater that's on the bottom of it. How mechanically handy are you?

Also, you don't have to remove all the screws around the bottom of the floor of the freezer to remove it. You lift the front part of it up over the steel ledge that seperates the freezer from the refrigerator section. Then it just pulls out.

If you attempt this, be prepared to get several cuts on your fingers, the fins on the coil can be razor sharp!
