Frigidaire Gallery Paint

Hi Y’all,

I have a 1990s Frigidaire Gallery stacked washer dryer unit. I took the control panel off and the dryer apart to trouble shoot a dryer issue. The dryer front & lint basket has some rust issues, so I sanded the rusty parts. There was one bit that was extremely difficult to reach and had some adhesive from a felt pad on it. Sanding was taking forever, so I put some homemade lye stripper on it. I was amazed to find that the lye did nothing to the paint.

I started to wipe the surface with acetone to clean it, and paint started coming off on my rag—what’s up with that?

Well I believe that the lye that you used soften the paint finish initially and then using the acetone there was not any finish left and just cleaned the paint off. Think about it, that this is what is used to remove coats of top coats and nail polish off from finger nails. If you had used either or, you might have been alright, but the combination of the 2 was your downfall.

cleaning...and paint

Not really...

I wanted to strip the paint on one part. I put enough lye on to strip several layers of paint, and it didn't touch it.

I wiped a different area with the acetone. It didn't strip it, but there was white paint on my rag...so I stopped. I just thought it was odd that the paint appeard to be acetone soluble but not lye soluble. I've never encountered paint that lye wouldn't touch.

So, mostly just curious...

Hi Sarah

I just recently replaced the felt seals on my Frigidaire Gallery stacked unit(it looks like the same model as yours) and I used acetone to remove the old adhesive left behind when I pulled the originals off. The acetone does seem to effect the paint, though in my case it wasn't enough to worry about. It just left faint white paint streaks on the rag I was using to rub the old adhesive away after the acetone had softened it up. However once I had the old adhesive removed the paint that remained seemed fine to me.
