I have a 2004 Frigidaire with ice maker. About eight years ago, I had to replace the solenoid intake valve, otherwise flawless performance. I changed the water filter in mid-May, then began to have problems with the ice maker.
Now the cubes come out stuck together, with a small bridge of ice connecting them across the flat part. The dispenser can separate them, but because they don't fall into the bin as separate cubes, they aren't raising the metal bale cut off lever, so the ice maker keeps making ice until the area above it is jammed with ice. It seems to me that the tray may be over-filling just a tad. My understanding is that the solenoid opens for a set period of time and does not sense water level in the tray.
Could my device be over-filling due to higher flow rater with the new filter? If so, is there a way to slow the flow a bit to prevent the bridges between the cubes? My work around for now is to keep the ice maker off until the bin is almost empty, then turn it on for 24 hours. Not exactly "set and forget" but better than no ice.
I suppose with time the flow through the filter might fix itself (slow down). I noted before the filter change that the cubes were smaller than normal, a sign of low flow through the filter (this is a Pure Source II filter). The flow through the water dispenser was noticeably faster post-filter change, which I expected. Thanks in advance for your advice.
PS I checked the PDF copy of the owner's manual, downloaded in 2004, and this issue is not addressed. It does discuss ice cubes stuck together in the bin, but does not address cubes stuck together like Siamese twins/octuplets directly from the ice maker.
