A good friend of mine has an older Frigidaire Drop-in range that is original to his kitchen. Over the years it has developed problems with several of the surface elements. He has decided to restore it instead of trying to find a drop-in that fits the existing cabinetry.

Does anyone have any documentation, service or otherwise, for this model? From the looks of things it seems like it will need to be rewired internally and one or more of the infinite switches and elements are bad. At least the oven still works fine. Of course the clock motor has been long dead.

Leads on parts or recommended sellers are welcome also.

Phil, I have the following "Tech-Talk" scanned in my collection.  Is this about the vintage of the range in question?

One possible source of parts it to keep ones eyes out for a Frigidaire range (including Flairs) 1960 - 1980.  The radiantube elements and infinite heat controls are largely interchangeable.  Also some of the oven stuff MAY be interchangeable or could at least be modified to work.

Mark, I think its newer then that, 70's I'd think. I'm waiting for a photo of it.

He sent me a poorly lit photo of the model/serial tag, I think I read the serial # as 70CD926

I'll post a photo when I get one!

Thanks!

The Clock:

Was almost certainly made by GE, who made clock/timer units for 99 percent of what was out there at one time.

When GE exited the electro-mechanical clock/timer business, a company in Iowa bought the inventory and parts and now services and replaces these units, with GE's blessing. Average charge is around $65-$100; you do need to have a rebuildable "core" unit to send in as an exchange.

The company is General Time Repairs in Carroll, Iowa. Website is below. Your friend owes it to himself to give them a shout if he's interested in a really first-rate restoration. Just to be sure everyone understands - the range may be a Frigidaire, but GE made most of their timers over the years (including the ones for Flairs), so this company is The Source:

Sandy, thanks for the link for the timer. I knew someone out there did repair them, but I didn't realize GE was behind the mechanism. I'll pass along the information.

He had stated he wasn't concerned with the clock. Sounded like he may be a resto-mod and put an electronic timer of his own design in place of the original. Perhaps knowing a source for repair exists may cause a change of course.

Fixing A GM Frigidare Drop In Range

I have an abundant supply of good used surface elements and inf switches are still readily available that easily adapt to a 70s FD range. The clock was likely NOT made by GE, while FD did use a few GE built clocks on some models they mostly used International Register to supply their range clocks and IR clocks are more of a challenge to get fixed as almost no parts exist for them.

While GE may have been one of the biggest makers of range clocks over the last 50 years I would still bet they did not even get close to making 50% of what was used over this time period.

Mark,

Thanks for the parts offer, I'll forward your information along to my friend. Last I spoke with him he was preparing to entirely re-wire the unit and I think he got a set of replacement infinite controls. I'm not sure what the status of the surface elements is, I have a feeling that it may have just been bad wiring/connections causing the failures.
