Frigidaire self cleaning range

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Very nice find Kenny!

Frigidaire introduced it's self-cleaning ranges (RCIE-39J) in it's 1965 model "J" line (likely in 1964 but they were 1965 models).

I just got a similar one in white... I had to drive over 10 hours to Flint MI to get it...

I took pictures last night in a friend's garage (now, I have to bring that one home and clean it!). Or maybe I should take a picture of it next to my Canadian 1967 Imperial range to show how different they are (and how boring are the Canadian models compared to those from the USA!).

I wish I had the service information or instruction manual for these but I don't, anybody has it?

Now I need to find the matching fridge and dishwasher!!

I just installed the 1967 Custom Imperial range in the kitchen instead of the 1973 Custom Deluxe.

Everything seems to work fine on it so far. It still has it's original infinite switches, including the Speed Heat switch and the hydraulic Robertshaw Heat-Minder switch and they all work fine.

I'm running the self-cleaning cycle now, I like the simple-to-set self-cleaning control!

I'm glad I drove from Quebec to Flint MI to get it! It was well worth it (for me!).

That's a BEAUTY, PhilR - a real worth-the-drive Frigidaire stove. I'm not jealous, but if I look at this any longer, I might enter the realm! LOL! Happy you got it, too. (wife loves it)

Early Top Of The Line 30" Frigidaire Range

Beautiful range Phil these are one of my favorite style FD ranges ever, as you know I have the 40" version of this range.

The only major downside to these easy to set early SC FD ranges was this range is overly complicated and they were prone to having many reliability problems as they aged. I once repaired a range exactly like yours where the customer had not been able to get the oven to work reliability for a long time. After looking over all the problems the oven had I went back with a new standard FD hydrolic thromostat and removed all the controls and switches associated with the SC functions of the oven and installed a regular thromostat.

When I was done I had filled an entire grocery bag with old parts and wiring, LOL.

I do remember your RCIE-75L range at the museum John, just like your Food Life Preserver fridge at home, these are two of my favorite appliances!

I am also a bit concerned about the long term use of this range, it's in pretty nice shape and it seems to be all original. I wish all parts were still easily available! I just finished the cleaning cycle with the drip bowls on the shelf. It worked fine!

I'll keep my simpler 1973 Custom Deluxe just in case something goes wrong with this one! I haven't moved it to the garage yet.

Look at those styling details...

even the smallest item, like the handle design on the surface burner control knobs, and the timer face design, are amazingly clean and sophisticated, a tribute to GM design, long acknowledged as the best in automobiles (at least before the '80s) as well as appliances. A beautiful industrial artifact!

Thanks Joe!

I've been searching for this exact model for quite some time! 4 hours after it appeared on Craigslist Michigan, I had already emailed the owner and even if it was a long drive, I was very motivated to get it!  And I was able to meet other members Carmine and Ovrphil at the same time as well as Petek on my way there and on my way back!

Well, let's say I "saw" Phil and the encounter was brief. Carmine kept us interested in his findings and house projects, we were there and gone. No complaints! Just sayin' It was a good to meet some people and connect faces to the names. PhilR - saw you on CBS Sunday Morning, too. [this post was last edited: 9/23/2015-20:13]

I just made an adjustment as the oven temperature was slightly off (too cool). Since these ranges use electric bi-metal cycler rather than a regular mechanical thermostat and gas or oil filled bulbs. The adjustment is quite different.

Not too well described in the documents I had, I had to guess and got it right. Now the oven temperature is exactly the same as what's on the dial!

Not the green 15 ohm resistor on the picture, moving the clamp on it towards the left increases the resistance from 0 to 15 ohms. It's supposed to be factory set at 7.5 ohms but it was slightly less (3.5 according to my cheap multimeter). I moved it to the left and at 13.5 ohms, it was a bit too much and the oven was too hot. I moved it back towards the center and now at 12 ohms, it's perfectly calibrated. I tried to set the dial on various temperatures and it was spot on on my oven thermometer, I let it cycle on and off for a long time and the temperature was still perfect.
