Frigidaire top loader, 1998 model

A friend has a model FWS223Rfs0 that is not spinning/rinsing. It fills, agitates, etc, in all cycles, then the timer just stops for spin-draining, sits for hours, he says.  I am headed over there after work tonight to diagnose, but my first bet is simply the lid switch? With it just permanently pausing at spin, maybe it's wired so that neither the motor nor timer motor work if the lid switch goes bad?

Any ideas? I never work on new machines, just old belt drives.

not uncommon for these lid switches to fail....seems like every one of these I get, that happens....

a few times it was just the lid switch holder that snaps, and the switch falls down inside.....

I just usually strip the wires and tape together.....but you have to watch some folks who let their kids play with machines, especially during spin with the lid open.....your call.....safety first....

Oh, I don't think he ever got any boyfriend pregnant, so there's no kids around. Thanks for the advice, Martin, I'll post results later. I easily found diagrams and parts lists online, turns out it has a seperate drain pump, which is the second thing I'll check.

 

I saw the machine last night for one minute to get the model number, it's sure a cheap build, one dial wonder, but it's just him at home and this is the first problem since he bought it new in 99. While I'm working on it, I'll have him de-lint the matching dryer, also likely with original 1999 lint.

has it an electric pump it is about this time they got rid of motor mounted pump and installed as small electric pump

Martin--it was just the lid switch, now safely bypassed electrically, and he knows to close the lid for safety. Yes it has a small electric pump instead of a main motor operated pump. The overall machine looks to be a pretty cheap build BOL, but it's just for one person, so I just shut the top down once i fixed it, all done.

well that is good...he's all set now....and yeah, their not the best built or good quality materials used...yet puzzling because I found their FLers to be decent and a little more heavily constructed....

check that repair off the honey do list....

how many machines people will throw away, only to find a simple lid switch was the cause of the breakdown.....can't count how many machines I have found like this...

but you also saved him from having to get a new machine, as well as a repairman would have charged 10.00 for the part and at least 75.00 for the service call...

I got a Frigidaire 1998 bol new, and it lasted me 14 years with one belt change. yes it looked cheap and it was still working when I got rid of it because I wanted a speed queen top load. that was the longest lasting washer I have ever owned. my husband is a machinic and I have a lot of grand kids clothes and bedding.
