NEAT washer Kenny.

It was made in the 49th week of 1974 in St. Joe Michigan. Odd that I was just looking at a 1974 catalog today and noticed that the new for '74 portables came with gold agitators. I also noticed they had plastic lids that year. It looks like this 'little bugger' has had an easy life. Very very cool....

Plastic lid

My friend Debbie got a Kenmore portable in '75 when she got her first apartment. However, hers was white and it had a metal lid, with the same handle as regular machines had. Were the plastic lids just for '74, or were they on less expensive models?

24"BDs

my '77 24"BD has a metal lid,it is a plain jane single valve"portable"version
with dishwasher style sink hook up-i think the folding plastic lids came on
versions meant to accomodate having a dryer mounted above using a stack kit.
Fun little washers, tached the spin on mine-795rpm.

My grandparents bought my mom this washer and the matching dryer when she moved into her first apartment! She told me that she loved having her own washer and dryer and when she married my dad, she gave them to my aunt who had the washer until I was about 6 or 7 and she had the dryer until I was 12! My aunt used that tiny little dryer with a full sized Whirlpool DD washer for 5 or 6 years, it lived through the beginning of her marriage and the birth of her first child! I miss that set!

COMPACT BD KM WASHER

Kenny your washer was designed for permanent installion, which is why it has the bi-fold lid and a dual inlet valve. They also made a 208-240 volt and gas dryer that matched your washer. Often these models were not even in the catolgs or retail stores most were sold through the builder sales division directly to builders and contractors. Neat washer we worked on hundreds of these over the years. I fact I just scraped one of the first 24" WP BD stacks this afternoon, it was from 1983 and still in good working condition.

I seldom bother posting these classic machines as no one really seems to want to get off thier a.. and get them even if I give them away, I also scraped a 1985 KM BD and a 1967 WP BD machine today { I did save you the rear feet Gordon].

You're right about the dryer, the store had the matching dryer with it, but they kept it, because it was the 220V model. Lots of lake cottages in their area.

I know what ya mean about vintage machines, I have a freebie FF listed. Decent machine, no takers. But a week after I scrap it, someone will be lamenting about how they can't find old washers anywhere!

Oh nice! Thats cute. I love the white tub and that folding top.

I'd love to find a portable set in the coffee color - especially if the dryer was gas. I have a beige Lady K portablewasher but it sounds like its dying, and there's a dead spot in the timer.

Awesome washer! It's time I looked for a portable/compact washer. Could you get a video of it up on Youtube sometime?

Condo inHI

My parents had this maching with a metal top permanantly installed in a condo in Maui. It was with a 220V matching dryer. The washer was on a rack that allowed it to slide forward just enough to open the lid. They were Avocado. The complex was built sometime in the early 70's I think 71 or 72. It was replaced by a WP unified Stack in the mid to late eighties. I replaced it with a Miele set a couple of years age. All thres sets have seen tons of use from our family, friends, and as a rental.

Hi Speed Spin

Also had that same harvest gold set in my vacation home condo in FL. 220vt dryer on metal stand, with fold top washer underneath. I definitely remember the washer having a higher spin speed then the regular issue WP/KM

BD COMPACT WASHER SPIN SPEED

These started out with a 950 RPM spin speed when these came out in 1972. The speed was reduced to 860 RPMs around 1977 due to problems with an axuallarly basket mounted bearing that road on the outside of the centerpost. This extra bearing would often size so a rework kit was used that eliminated the basket mounted bearing and we pound an extra top bearing in the main centerpost and replace the top centerpost seal. When the factory eliminated the the extra bearing they reduced the top spin speed by making the spin clutch pulley a little larger.
