We recently purchased a "new" sofa from the Salvation Army. I usually use either Kirby shampoo or foam carpet cleaner out of a can to clean the furniture, however this sofa's tag says NOT to use a water based cleaner. I always used to use a product called "Energine" but cannot find it here. Should I just use straight Naptha or what?

You're supposed to clean furniture????

Seriously, can you use Capture on upholstery? It's a dry powder that does a nice job on rugs. Often, these products are pitched as "rug/upholstery shampoo", so I thought maybe...

By the way, what happens if you put water on the couch? Does it shrivel like the Wicked Witch? Or does it turn evil like...geez, those furry creatures from that movie...Goonies?

Sorry, the mind's going.

Nope, gone.

Another method would be

to apply dry baking soda, rub it in, and then vacuum it out.

I have had very good luck with this method, and it's cheaper than Capture, (which works well on carpeting, but can get a bit pricy.)

Water and water based cleaners can cause damage to certain fabrics and dyes.
