I was out with my friend Mikki, she is a garage sale fiend...

My find is a WestBend Stir Crazy popcorn popper.

I was assured that it still ran, that the family had gotten a microwave, and just found microwave popcorn easier.

No literature with it, of course. How do I clean the popping surface, which feels very sticky? (or should I at all?) I know that the stirring rod detaches, and I'll just run a Brillo pad on the stirring rod.

And then, how much oil, and how much Orville Bedenrocker?

(I thought of dear Jaune when I saw it.)

I think it was a decent buy for 2.00
(sorry, no digicam)

I also got one of my favourite hard rock cd's, "BloodSugarSexMagik" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. (this copy is for my bus bag.)

You might be able to get instuctions on line Or I think
Oroville from Valpariso (sp?) might have oil and maze
proportions on his bottle. Is it teflon lined or alum?
Either or, I think it will clean best with liberal (left)
application of Dawn Davenport dishwashing liquid.

westbend.com for sticky grease i used the foaming *bubbles* type bathromm cleaner. you will need a small brush and dont overspray, since i think the machine has nooks the cleaner can run into. those make great popcorn. if you can get the commercial-packaged packets that contain measured and seasoned oil with popcorn even better!

a good rag

a good terry cloth rag and lots of amonia and some elbow grease should remove all that goo. i use amonia to clean a whole lot of things and it works great for me. just remember to do this outside and try not to breath to much of those vapors..

I had this corn popper in college, someone told me "It looks like an animal going around there" when it was popping. As I remember, I would use a tablespoon of corn oil and a third a cup of store brand popcorn, which should just cover the plate. If you use Orville's use less as the dome will rise off, spilling all over the coffe table. As for cleaning, I agree with using the ammonia. It is aluminum lined with Teflon. I have washed the top dome in the dishwasher, on the top rack only as I melted one on the bottom (I had a total of 3 of these units). Even though you use oil in the Stir Crazy I think it is healthier than microwave popcorn, the family that gave this up is going to be getting a lot more fat in their diet as microwave popcorn has lard (Dr. Lisa Hark on "Honey We're Killing The Kids" tells her families to get rid of the junk food, including microvave popcorn). Can we have pictures of your first popping?

I wish I had a digicam,

but you'll have to make do with words.

Finally got to it this afternoon. Washed the dome with Dawn, and then I attacked the stirring rod with Brillo, after detaching it, of course.

I cleaned the popping surface with a paste of baking soda and a very little water. The stickiness diminished but did not go away entirely. Wiped it to rinse several times with a little fresh water and paper towel.

I used 3 tablespoons store brand soy oil, and about 3/4 cup of Jolly Time popcorn from a bag. Max load on this 6 quart model is 3 tablespoons, and 1 cup raw corn. Well, I would not have had room for any more corn! Even less, if I had gone for Mr. Bedenrocker's (May he rest easily. Did you know that he was a trained plant geneticist from Purdue U?)

It was fast, and nicely quiet. Nearly all kernels popped (I am sure it had something to do with the freshness of the kernels.) I bet it was no slower than microwave popcorn.

I kept the upper lid to the butter melter off, as per instructions from westbend.com.

The popcorn? Very good. Maybe not the best I have ever had, but very good.

I shook some plain table salt on it, and then a very little salt-fee lemon pepper, and a dash of garlic powder.
Something close to popcorn nirvana.

I think next time, I might pop in the soy oil, and season with some less expensive extra-virgin olive oil.

Darn good buy for 2.00.

Oh yes Lawrence nothing quite like popcorn made the traditional way. I have an old Knapp Monarch popper that I enjoy using occasionally. While an occasional bag of the mw corn might not be so bad a thing, this is really so easy, and better if you want to make a quantity for friends who are joining you.

I have a brand new Stir Crazy. I can't believe they still made these and they will pop FAST. You need soft butter in the dispenser but it does work.

Pts, sflp, and dogp, sound nirvanicaly superb.
My late friend Gavin "Gay Baby" Bunch concocted a
post pop dressing that combined whatever oil and
a lesser amount of butter to afford juiciness with
slightly less fattening!
play, play, play!!!
