Hi! Club Friends, I've got a 1992 Maytag {Magic Chef} Gas Stove, that has never up until now ever had anything happen to it.

The Front-Right Burner's Spark Ignitor isn't Sparking all the time and when it does, it looks like it isn't Sparking as much as the other Burner's Ignitor's are doing.

Is there something that I might have to do, to clean out the Spark Ignitor?

What kind of a job would it be to replace the Ignitor, would it be somewhat easy to get too and to be able to get replaced? This is "BTW" a Sealed Burner Stove, with the Broiler in the Oven and a Storage Drawer. It has an Analog Clock and Time Bake/Timer Mechanisms and a Self-Clean Oven.

The only actual Repair that I had was early on, after purchasing the Stove, the Clock, Time Bake and Timer Knobs got melted down, during a Self-Cleaning Cycle. Now what I do is move everything away from the sides of the Stove, set the Self-Cleaning Cycle and then take the knobs off, to prevent them from getting melted again.

I would gratefully appreciate any and all help. At this time I don't know where the Owner's Manual is at and the Storage Drawer area, where no doubt the Model Number isn't very easily accessible, so I'm not really able to get the Model Number. I will try to check with the company where I bought the Stove, because they do happen to have quite a lot of Customer's purchase Receipts in their Computer System. If they can help me with the Model Number, then I will Post it here, thank you everyone for your help.

Peace and Kind Regards, Steve

Hi, Steve!

The model number SHOULD be on a tag on the front around where the pan drawer goes in. Hit me with a model Number and I can help.

It sounds like you may have one of several things going on.
1) The igniter/burner is dirty and not allowing the spark to jump. It operates like a car spark plug and will misfire if fouled by something.
2) The igniter might have a crack or something of the like in the ceramic insulator and need to be replaced.
3) the ignition wire that goes from the igniter back to the module has an issue.
4) The ignition module has issues.

If it's the burner style I think it is (a black/taupe one piece burner - see below picture...) you can turn the burner (counter clockwise about 1/4 turn...)and it will "unlock" and come off the stove top. They can be tight and you may need to use one of those jar lid removal pads to get a good grip. Just don't damage the igniter. Also, be careful not to let the ignition wire fall back inside of the hole or you'll have to dig for it... From there, you can remove 1 screw to remove the igniter for inspection. Since all the burners on this model are the same size, you COULD switch two burner heads and see if the problem follows the suspect burner assy. If so, then an igniter might be in order. If the problem stays in the same location, then you might have a wire or module issue. The modules do wear out after time. Let us know...

Good luck!

My Burners Are:

Quite different, than the ones that you show in your help Pix. Thank You Andrew for your info, I really appreciate it and what to attempt. My Flame Covers like a Cast-Iron, with a Black Enamel Top are removable, with a "Leg" that goes into a hole, to hold that Cover in place. The lower part of the Burners at the built-in overflow/drip indentions have a Ring around them.

Would my Burners still turn as shown, to remove the Burners, to check out the Ignitor? Should I attempt to clean the opening of that particular Ignitor, if so what might I use to clean the opening. Would a small Wire Brush work, or would that be too harsh and cause some other problem?

The basic color of the Stove is Almond, with a Black Glass Oven Door, the Storage Drawer is Almond and both the Drawer have a Black {Leather-Look} Handle. The Backsplash is Black Glass and there is a Fluorescent Light with a separate Push-Button Switch, from the Oven Light Push-Button.

Kind Regards, Steve

Hey! HCD:

I don't have a Digital Camera unfortunately. However, I just took a chance of moving some things out of the way, to see if I could locate the Owner's Manual and instead I found my old Extended Warrantee {unfortunately expired} but it has both the Model #LCRG760 and the Serial #202666DM and it was purchased on November 6, 1992. I hope that this will help you and maybe you can locate a Burner Pix, on the Parts Listing. Thank You very much for your help with this problem, HCD...

Kind Regards, Steve

Hey! HCD:

The Serial #202666DM actually is: Serial #10-202666DM. After I wrote the info off of the Extended Warrantee Paper, I found the Owner's Manual and saw that I had written both the Model and Serial Numbers inside the front Cover. I don't know if this makes any difference, but I thought that I would sent that extra info as well, just in case.

Kind Regards, Steve

Hi! HCD:

I just sent you an E-Mail, with some Pix's of the Burner, through Repair-Clinic. I've got a new Internet Service Provider through AT&T/DSL and my E-Mail Address should be coming to you on my E-Mail to you. Thank you for your help, I hope that these Pix's help you further of knowing which Burners my Stove has and what I need.

If you think that I should just replace the whole Burner Assembly, as shown, what kind of a Price would you have for me, compared to Repair-Clinic's Price as shown?

Kind Regards, Steve

RCD, sorry for writing wrong Initials:

Hi! RCD, I just realized that I wrote the first Initial wrong, sorry about that. Anyway, I've just written another E-Mail to you, with some more info about my Stove Burners.

Kind Regards, Steve

I have this issue with my Dacor stove.....I turn ALL the lights off in the kitchen to see how brite the spark is during ignition.....then take a small file, and go over the top of the ignitor about four strokes, creates a nice spark and works great for about 2 months, then it starts acting up again, in 5 years have not worn away the igniter...

when I misplace my file, a simple fingernail file will work also....

I look forward in hearing from:

Drew and others with some more info about how to take apart the Top of my Stove, with it having Sealed Gas Burners, in hopes of not having to replace the whole Burner Assembly.

Has anyone else ever taken apart the Top of a Sealed Gas Burner Stove, to replace a Burner Igniter or whole Burner Assembly? I would gratefully appreciate any and all info from anyone who knows for sure, so I don't create any damage to the Top, or Burners.

Peace and Kind Regards, Steve

Steve, have you had the stove unhooked or moved lately. While our kitchen flooring was changed the stove was in the dining room. We had finicky burner syndrome for a couple of weeks with the front right "power" burner. Had other things going on and just avoided using it, it now works perfectly again. Hope your fix is this easy. arthur

Steve:

I do not know your particular brand and model, but I can pass one thing on from my own experience:

For a time, I had a Whirlpool self-cleaning gas range with electronic igniters. Excellent range, too, and I say that as a confirmed lover of electric ranges. But eventually I had the ignitor problem.

What was needed was to remove the grates and the lift-off caps from the sealed burners, then remove the burner itself from the top of the range by removing three screws. Sounded very simple.

What actually happened was that those three screws were very damaged by the heat they'd been subjected to; each one broke.

It required drilling out the screws and re-tapping their threads a size larger to be able to complete the ignitor replacement. I would not wish that job on my worst enemy. Very tedious and tiresome.

All I can tell you is that if you have a situation like that, you might do very well to let an authorised repairman do it if that's an affordable option for you.

Hi! Art {alr2903}

Thank you for you reply, however although my Stove has been moved for the same reason as you, it was somewhere between 1995 and 1997, after I Inherited my house that I grew up in. I've been with real good luck until now. What I'm thinking has happened is because of the unfortunate shape that my whole house is in, I've only been able to use only the Front-Right Burner for Stove-Top Cooking and I've been using my Sharp Microwave/Convection for Oven Baking. I also have a Maytag Microwave/Hood above my Maytag Gas Stove, that I also use for Microwave Cooking.

I will let everyone know what happens, for taking care of this problem. Thank you very much for everyones replies and
very helpful suggestions or recommendations as a remedy.

Sandy {danemodsandy} thank you as well for your reply and suggestion. As you can see above in this Posting, my problem is due to overuse of the Burner and Igniter.

It does sound like we do/did have similar Brands of Gas Stoves, with the Burners having 3-Screws to remove in order to lift the Top, to get to the Burners.

Peace and Kind Regards, Steve

Use a lighter LOL! Or one of those clicky things, every British home has one because they always pack in !

Hey! Dom "gpo746"

Thank You for your suggestion, I don't think that I could attempt to try a Lighter, because it seems to me that would be too close to the Flame, when the main Burner ignited. At least with shorter Wood Matches you've got a better chance of it not following the Lighter Flame and Burning your Fingers/Hand.

I've been using short Wood Matches to light that Burner for now. Hopefully after Payday, I will be able to get the Replacement Burner/Igniter.

Peace and Kind Regards, Steve
