gay couples in soap operas

Hey there,

I just wanted to ask you guys how famous stories about gay couples or coming out related themes are in Amercian soap operas. I recently had the chance to follow that story between those two in men in "one life to live". Unfortunately, I have no clou how the story ended or is it still in progress? Maybe someone can date me up. The last thing I've seen was that woman falling out of the window during the press conference but I don't know if the cop is now together with the other one or if he is still hiding. By the way, it was fun to see the woman falling out of the window, it was so dramatic. I always loved the American way of drama, for example Stephanie from B&B batteling with others or throwing people in the pool. That was fun

But back to topic: It seems that gay couples in soaps are very famous atm. Here in Germany, we have 5 Soaps and in 4 we have at least one who plays or is the gay and in 3 of them we have gay couples with one still developing. It is rather common here to have gays in soaps but what about you guys in America? I know that the states of the middle are in part very conservative as the film "brokeback mountain" would not be shown in some of the cinemas of central America. Unbelievable!
So how about the soaps? Aren't the TV stations afraid of any bad reactions to those stories?

In Germany, the first kiss between men in daytime drama was in the "Lindenstraße" in 1987. I thought this was already late. But 2007 really freaks me out.

I like seeing gay characters

in soaps. However, unlike you fine Europeans who aren't afraid of showing skin or tapping into forbidden topics, Anerica is way behind the times, but is slowly coming out of the closet in matter of speaking. Years ago sopas were designed for female homemakers who stayed at home. As you all know, Procter & Gamble produced many of these soap operas to help sell their laundry products. Today, with more female homemakers working outside the home, I have heard the new trend is now geared toward college students and gay men. In fact, I have heard that soaps are on the decline. Also remember, that if consersative American people knew that a company was endorsing homosexual issues, companies would lose money big time.

That used to be true, not any more. E.g. Will & Grace was one of NBC's highest rated shows, and it was broadcast during prime time. The show is doing equally well in syndication.

Just look at hrc.org's website and you will find a host of companies that are gay friendy. I just wish I could get LOGO in my area. After all, If I have to pay for sports and other non interesting channels on my basic cable, I should have a choice.

The christianists are still trying to get an amendment through congress to have us declared sub-human forever and thus incapable of marriage.
The Republicans are fighting ENDA tooth and nail, even something as simple as prohibiting hate crimes against us is being fought on the grounds that it will make it impossible for Christians to preach hatred from the pulpit.
No, really.
DADT and DOMA are clearly stupid, DOMA is unconstitutional. Ending them may prove impossible because the Democrats don't have the balls to stand up for what's right instead of what's politically convenient.

I hope I'm wrong, but at this point, I think we've been sold down the river.

In Australia, it was No 96 in the mid 70's. Man on man action with one guy naked and the other wearing a towel. The next morning together they wake up in bed naked from the waist up touching each other. Then they're strutting around in way to short dressing gowns. The gay character is a lawyer and ongoing in the series with a wide range of partners.

Other than Will and Grace, there's not a lot on Prime time TV over here, there has been some Lesbian stuff on Neighbours but nothing else that I'm aware of.

John, we live in the mountains, and our only option for TV is Comcast cable. Comcast don't carry LOGO in our area, even though we have one of the largest populations of gay people in the world. They don't carry NASA-TV, even though Mountain View (NASA-Ames) is just a few miles away. Comcast does however give us countless shop at home channels, religious wackos and foreign language programs.

If satellite was an option, we'd cancel Comcast immediately.

The only cable or dish networks in my area that carry LOGO are Time Warner Cable and Directtv. Have any of you tried these?
