The President will have to make some important choices in the coming days that concern gay taxpaying citizens.
Will we recieve equal representation? Or will we be kicked to the curb as usual?

IMO I'm tired of all the politicians "lip-service". And I'm tired of them cow-towing to the special interest extremeists whether it be Rush Limbaugh or the horribly prejudiced black clergy.

It would be the "bomb" to get representation on the Supreme Court.
I remain guardedly hopeful.

Patience, My Friends...

...President Obama will have to engage very soon, no matter his personal stance on the issue and no matter what any one group within his voter base would like to see him do or not do.

The reason is Article IV, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, commonly known as the Full Faith and Credit Clause, which provides for the recognition of every state's "public acts, records and judicial rulings" by every other state. In practise (as it applies to marriage) it means that if a hetero couple got married in say, Utah, then every other state considers them married, too.

Now that we have five - and soon, hopefully more - states legalising same-sex marriage, we now have a legal question that will have to be addressed sooner or later. If Full Faith and Credit is applied to same-sex unions, then every state would have to recognise these marriages as legal. If it is not applied, then it would be a glaring exception to the general automatic application of Full Faith and Credit, putting the Federal government under some legal questions that would have to be cleared up.

The more states that legalise same-sex unions, the more urgent this question will become. Obama's no dummy, and he'll deal with it when it becomes unavoidable. Being a politician who will want to seek re-election, I would look for a truly progressive stance to come only after he's comfortably sworn in for a second term. I know that's not soon enough for a lot of people, but that's reality, folks. Just be patient and keep working on state-by-state stuff; Full Faith and Credit will be the trigger that brings nationwide equal rights in the end.

I think

Obama remembers that we lost all our important battles under Clinton in the first 24 months.
The remaining six years were a holding action, with us losing ground all down the line.

There are three factors at play here, well four, really.

First, Obama, sadly, will be replacing two more Supremes. Unless we get to five, nothing will be safe. Nothing.

A court challenge right now would probably cost us a generation.

Second, we need to keep winning so that there is a sense of inevitability behind overturning DOMA.

Without federal rights, we can have all 50 states and DC and still aren't recognized as human.

Third, we have to keep taking away the arguments the christianists can use against us with Joe-6pack. Religious exemptions are purely horse-feathers, but they take away the hateful christianists rallying cry: "Teh Gays are coming, Teh Gays are coming!"

That stupid "I'm afraid of the coming storm" video, Joe-the-plumber's helper and little Ms. I-strip-for-money-Prejean are all they have.

Finally, we need luck. One 9/11 and we are screwed.

Personally, I think we might get past DOMA off the books, at least the worst of it, before we get the rest.

He won't deal with it. He isn't moving on DADT -- in fact he is upholding it! He'll probably sign the hate crime/thought police into law, make it look like he's working for us, and then let the states continue to deal with gay marriage. He said, along with all presidential candidates, he was against it. Besides, he has more important things like trashing capitalism and taxing people who actually do get a head.

Peter,

I genuinely don't know whether he is turning coat or whether he is playing his cards very close to his chest.

The christianists held absolute power until just a few months ago, they were still writing laws the morning of the inauguration!

I really want to see DOMA and DADT overturned, it is an abomination that we have sub-human status in the US. But a partial victory only to see it overturned (somebody from Georgia just introduced a constitutional amendment relegating us to eternal non-human status this week in the US Senate) is not in our interests.

I'll give him a full year before I get too concerned.

Germany faced the most embittered resistance of all the early human-rights adopters in Europe.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to talk to the politician from the CSU who had spearheaded the conservative resistance to gay partnerships in our parliment. He's up for re-election in the fall and is slated to win with a vast majority.

I asked him about his stance on gay rights and how he felt today.

He said: "I was wrong." I am sorry to see the harm my positions did and glad we lost.

That is true progress - this part of Germany is regarded as deep Texas by the rest of the country. For him to say that was a true sign of change.

I don't mention him as a representative of the Republicans. They have drifted so far to the hateful right, there is no hope. I am thinking more of those Democrats who still have a conscience. If Obama needs time to rally (or blackmail) them, then our chances are much greater.

Especially if we have packed, er, carefully and thoughtfully replenished, the Supreme Court.

I wish

if I did, the vegetarian Tiger would be supplementing his diet with some christianist meat.

One reason Europe is stronger on civil rights than the US is because we have been through centuries of religious wars, the Nazi era and the communists.

It is telling that the only parts of Europe which are still anti-gay are the ultra-nationalist-ultra-Catholic states like Poland.

Personally, I define an honest politician as one who, once bought, stays bought. Expecting all too much more than that is unrealistic. Democrats are the worst possible politicians, except for the Republicans and the selfish Liberals...

No doubt President Obama is a major upgrade but I am not fooled by his slick platitudes he is basically homophobic and would rather sexual minoritys just go away, but since that is not going to happen he will do just enough to avoid completely alienating LGBT voters. To that end all I ask is that he shred and piss on the “Defiance of marriage act” and “Don’t ask don’t tell” if he does that he can hate me all he wants and I will give him money and do just about anything he asks.
