Yes, the slanted control panel was introduced on wshers and dryers in the early mid 60s, but the control panel of the combo was not redesigned until 67-68. Maybe they had to use up all of the pedestal style panels before changing the design.

combo abuse...
...we had one in coppertone, with the pedestal control panel-My dad always oversudsed it, & it would drool onto the floor- I liked making it suck sinkful after sinkful of water back into it, & as I recall it began to leak onto the floor when the water was about 2/3 up onto the window- I always got impatient with the length of time it would take to dry stuff, we always kept it set on #8- even back then, I wanted a Whirlpool top loader like the pink one our neighbor had down the street-We lived with this combo from 1967-1969
