GE Dishwasher Early 1970s

I never paid much attention to appliances until I found this website/forum. I have a rental unit which has the original GE Dishwasher from when the place was built in the early 1970's. It works well, looks dated, is a little loud but no one has complained about it. Was this a basic, medium or high grade dishwasher back in they day and how would it compare quality/performance wise to let's say a white Whirlpool from the mid 1990s before all the energy efficiency and low water mandates went into effect?

I would say it's basic, very near BOL, but definitely good apartment-grade.  I can't make any comparison to the WP products regarding performance, but I have always liked the layout of the lower rack.  I also never was a fan of WP's silverware-in-the-door configuration.  Just my 2 cents' worth.

This is a step up

from the absolute bottom of the line (BOL). With rinse agent and an enzyme based detergent, and truly hot water...at or over 140F, properly loaded, it can clean very, very well. However, those conditions need to be met, especially rinse agent (Jet Dry or similar-) if the water is the least bit hard.

Near Bol

Given good hot water, was actually a very good washer. They were also good dryers, as it had a good calrod element in it. I also liked the utilization of the bottom rack above the tunnel needed for the tower. Always held either saucers, or bowls very conveinently SP? They were also very good on messy pots and pans.

The official name of the area on the bottom rack that you describe was "saucer shelf".  An appropriate name.

GE Dishwasher

I believe this dishwasher dates from the mid 1970s when GE's TOL "Potscrubber II" (Potscrubber 2) didn't actually use the PowerTower, rather, they used 3 wash-arms. In the link below, you will see a thread regarding the near TOL machine from its day and a promotional information piece from the day. 

 

I was able to purchase the full guide from the Ephemera some time back, so you might be able to find it. This model doesn't appear to be in the guide, although it appears to be a portable model that was built in (Perhaps cheaper than a standard "Built In" model), so you've got the GSC412 (but check that up with the data sheet on it). Hopefully, I'm not breaking any rules by posting the two shots from the piece (If I am, somebody please tell me: I will remove the photos if need be).

UNUSED GE Pot scubber Dishwasher

I have an unused GE Pot scrubber dishwasher dated 1978. This unit still has all of the paper work inside as will as original cardboard and styrofoam. If you or you know anyone interested - please let me know. thanks
