Ugh

Looks like this will be a parts donor. Placed water in the tub. Ran just fine but major leak from underneath. Looks like the large drain port on the outer tub rusted through. I'll see if I can open it up and get a better look but probably not worth the trouble since many of these other parts are impossible to locate.

oh no!!!

i'm sorry to hear/read that. hopefully it's just the hose needing to be tightened onto the drain port???

good luck and i'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it's not the large drain port rusted through and that the hose just needs tightening on there!!!

Rusty tub

I'd be inclined to attempt to repair this, as I don't usually find Dispensalls in the cracks of the sofa cushions, so to speak--especially so with the tanks and diverter in place. :-)

Outer tub trauma is very common on Filter-Flos; if they don't rust at the bottom from debris, they rust at the top from inner tub strikes caused by off-balance loads.

I would raise the top (there may be some rust abatement to do there as well), remove the agitator and inner tub, and inspect the outer tub. It may be possible to clean and seal the offending area, or even find a donor machine of same capacity to swap the outer tub. We're having to do the latter to preserve a very nice programmed Filter-Flo from the late seventies that has pinhole leaks galore in the area near the tub drain.

Glue

John,

Very true about resorting to glue. The only reason I thought that might be why the top was frozen shut was because I considered doing that to my '68 and THIS is why I didn't! So we will just add "tub gasket" to the list of parts for this little puppy.

In the meantime, the three tub bolts are next and I'm starting with those this morning. I sprayed plenty of WD-40 on them last night and they have soaked all night in it. Going to try the old clockwise/counterclockwise on the bolts and hopefully they will pop loose.

I have a feeling the rust issue is just going to be in that one area where the leak is. It otherwise is looking relatively rust free so far. Maybe it'll earn a spot in the basement today. Who know?

Thanks for the encouragement! This is the first "new" machine I've had in 5 years and first one I've worked on in 2 years. I guess I'm a little rusty myself.

Tub bolts - 1: Jon - 2

Bolts were still very frozen. One broke unfortunately and after a couple of blisters I got the other two out. Tubs both look really good and clean. The area around the smaller drain port looks like it was sealed at some point but rust continued underneath. This shouldn't be impossible. Hoping maybe I can drill out the broken bolt from the tranny. Any suggestion in the best way to seal off a leak like that?
