GE Dryer Model : GTDP490ED3WS

I found this dryer for sale, and I am wondering if anyone knows a year of manufacture and whether it would be reliable. GE Dryer Model #GTDP490ED3WS; Serial #AD735581A.

This would be for my sister, who had bad experiences with computer boards on her washer and dryer, and is looking for models with electro-mechanical controls. She doesn't need anything with a lot of cycles, but would like something not prone to needing repair. Seller says they have had "no issues with this dryer."

Serial decodes as January 2002 or 2014 (or 1978 or 1990).  GE repeats serial coding on a 12-yr cycle.  I'm guessing 2014.

The timer is mechanical but there is an electronic board which presumably has function on the moisture-sensing auto-dry cycle(s).

Yes 2014. I’d hold out for a Kenmore, Whirlpool, Roper, Inglis, and a few others with the lint filter mounted on top of the dryer. They are very reliable. You can send us pictures and we can tell you if it’s a good one or not and can give the build date with the model/serial information.

The GE dryer would foot the bill if you need something now but if you have some time I’d look for the whirlpool built dryers.

Used 2014 GE electric dryer

These are good performing dryers if they don’t have a real long vent they are not nearly as durable is a whirlpool built dryer, however

 

The weak parts of the GE dryer are on the minor side, broken timer knobs. The front drum support tends to wear out pretty easily and the lint filter housing below the lint filter. The duct tends to get clogged with lint. If you buy this dryer, should take it apart and clean it

 

More major problem is they tend to have bad motors where they fail to start.

 

If you’re going to buy this dryer, I would ask a few questions, one why are they selling it. two how much use has it had, approximately how many loads a week , 10 loads a week is considered fairly heavy use, if it’s had a fraction of that it might have some more life in it And then the other question is how much will your sister use it if she wants a dryer to do 10 loads a week this is probably not the best choice if she’s just doing one or two loads a week it might be OK and of course you left out what you have to pay for it I wouldn’t think it’s worth more than $50-$150 if it checks out well otherwise.
