Not appliance related per-se but interesting.
GE has just formed "General Displays and Technologies", a joint venture with TATUNG (electronics mfr). Together they'll manufacture GE branded HDTVs. Additionally they're also tied in with NBC / UNIVERSAL to deliver media, internet and other digital content directly to the television. The TVs will be IPTV, cable, satellite or fiber-optic.
Just search on GE, TATUNG etc and you'll get the full story. I'm intrigued!

I remember Tatung...they made all the monitors for IBM for the PS/2 and PS/1 computers. They had pretty good pictures on them, but their reliability was dismal. They are however a Japanese company, not a Chinese company, and many of the early Japanese companies that had quality issues have improved their products significantly, so maybe there is room for a Tatung TV on my wall.

Since GE owns the RCA nameplate, are they going to be making sets for the RCA nameplate too?

...read an article...

Uh Oh, I was mistaken they are based out of Taiwan, with their manufacturing plants in China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America (read Mexico) Doesn't sound like they will be any better than they were in the IBM PS/2 days if they are sourcing their product out of Southeast Asia and China. Everyone in the electronics trade is familiar with the capacitor disaster from China that still persists. No matter if it's low end or high end, Chinese electronics are bad news!!!

GE Sold the RCA nameplate years ago to Thompson Electronics, a French company, which in turn sold it to some Chinese company 2 years ago. Anything electronic with the RCA or GE nameplate on it would be pure junk.
