Ge Filter flo overflowing in spin cycle

Hi I hope some one can help my ge filter flo washer just started to overflow during the spin. Water rises up and over the outer tub. I replaced the pump,coupling,rebuilt the clutch, motor runs at correct speed,also replaced the tub boot. Does any one know what the problem could be?
I am puzzled. The only thing that i have not replaced is the top tub gasket because it appears to be in good condition. If any one has had this problem and has fixed it please let me know how. thanks Tom

I had a problem like that with my Hotpoint TL, which is about the same vintage as your GE. It wasn't severe but it was mildly annoying, maybe a little less than a quarter-cup of water spillage per cycle (it could be mopped up and the floor dried with a fan, which also got air circulation under the cabinet and into the interior of the machine). What I found was that fiddling with the leveling feet fixed it almost entirely. The best setting was a little bit off-level with the front edge a little higher than the rear. The goal is to slightly counteract the point at which water comes up the highest in the tub based on what you actually observe (bypass the lid switch and watch the spin cycle).

Ultimately I would suspect the problem is that the pump is running more slowly than it should or has lint buildup that's reducing its efficiency. (In my case the machine belongs to property management so I'm not going to go to great lengths to troubleshoot & repair, and I have a smaller washer that I use for most of my laundry so it's not critical.)

My 64 Filter-Flo did the that same thing a couple times,until I found the drain hose was kinked. I spent a few hours cleaning and resealing the top,thinking that was the trouble. Even dug out all the plumbers putty around the Filter-Flow port and replaced with new,thinking that was the problem. Just did not see the kink in the drain hose,although I had looked for that first.

Check outer tub for holes. They usually rub a hole in the left rear where the inner tub scrapes when off balance. It's kind of hard to see these holes without removing the inner tub. Remove the back and run the machine to look for where the leak is coming from. Also, pin holes in the bottom of the outer tub are common with the GE's. If it is leaking bacause of slow drain the water will likely come out the overflow tube on the left of the machine. Time the drain. I believe it should take no longer than 75 seconds to drain. If it take longer, there is likely a restriction in the drain hose.

The top of the outer tub seals to the underside of the actual top of the washer so water should not be coming out there. There is an overflow port on the left side as you look at the tub (at least it is on the left in my older GE). On older ones it is gray or black and rubber-like in composition. If this has broken, been removed or turned the wrong way water will come out when it spins. If it is there, make sure the the opening inside the tub is turned so that it does not face the direction in which the water is swirling as the inner tub spins. If it is broken, it needs to be replaced. Does it do this only on the higher water levels or every time it drains, even on the low water levels?

Hi Yes the machine only does this on higher water levels. I am thinking that there is a speed problem. It is not spinning at full speed. I am thinking it may also be a problem with the transmission. I will do some more checking and let everyone know what my findings are. Tom

Hi Tom!

This is Matthew in Wilkes Barre. I just had the same problem with my machine and John (Coldspot66)had a suggestion that really helped me. Turns out that when I lifted the cover to check things out I broke the seal on the dried out tub seal around the top. There was just enough room on the 10 o'clock part of the tub that during spin with high water levels, some water would bubble over the top and down onto the water valve. I literally had to crouch down on the floor with a flashlight in the back as it started spinning to find what was wrong and where it was comng from. Instead of replacing the seal I got some 1"wide grey weatherstripping from Lowes and put the sticky side on the underside of the cabinet top. Dry it off throroughly first of course and then, from years of use, the seal had left a mark around the underside of the top. I simply followed it around with a continuous strip of foam and there have been no more problems! - I bet thats the cause. If you need help - let me know - I'm experienced on this one!

I know this may sound like a foolish question, but how might you be able to "pop the top" on a GE without destroying and having to replace that seal around the top? Or is it just a given that once you lift the entire top, you will just have to replace the seal?

Hi everyone Matt has the solution. I did some investigating and it is definatly the top seal. I guess when i replaced the tub boot the top seal had just out lived its usefullness. I will replace the seal with an extra one that i have lying around. I will update on the outcome. Thank- you Matt and thank you to everyone that was able to help Tom

Hi All The overflow problem is fixed. I replaced the upper tub gasket and no more water on the floor. It has a new problem. It works fine in agitate but when it is time for spin, the washer now runs for a minut or two and then trips the breaker. It is doing this intermittantly the motor also seems to be over heating not sure why. The motor is nearly new. This is very stress full .

Hi! 68IMPERIAL, have you adjusted/tightened the Belt at all, since you have been working on the Washer otherwise? Maybe you have the Belt too tight, causing the Washer to Agitate all right, but not able to Spin. Try to not Stress over this, it can be corrected, one way or the other. {LOL} Let us know what you find out about this problem, good luck keep us informed, as to what was causing this problem and the remedy.

Did you replace the motor relay when you replaced the motor? Relays are a common problem with the filter flows. The relay must be in place for it to operate properly. If it has come loose and fallen down the motor will not operate properly. The relay has a gravity plunger. If it is not upright the plunger cannot break contact causing the motor to run on both start and run windings. Also, trying to run the machine when it is not upright, like when trying to run it when the machine is lying down while testing or checking something else, will cause the same problem.

Matthew, I'll check my Hotpoint for a top seal as you mentioned, and then try the weatherstripping approach. Very clever, I think you might have the answer there.

Now the only other problem with that machine is it doesn't do "gentle" any more, just "normal" (which should probably be labled "strong"). I'm guessing that's a transmission issue, which would be beyond my competence to fix. But I could be mistaken...

Designgeek, sounds like a clutch related problem and NOT the transmission. The GE filter-flo Hotpoints usually used a single speed motor with a two-speed clutch. The clutch is located on the motor and can easily be repaired or replaced. Be sure and check the trip solenoid and lever mounted adjacent to it. It is designed to catch/release the [spinning] torque arm (on the clutch) in order to change speeds.

The previous water leak may be rearing its ugly head.
me thinks this may pass when it dries out a bit.

My GE was tripping the GFI in the garage where I was playing with it/repairing it and got some thingss wet. It all went away on its own.

GE Problem Fixed

Hi Everyone I am happy to say that the problem is all fixed. The issue with it tripping the breaker was that i had the belt tension too tight and didnt realize it. I loosened the tension and it is purring like a kitten. Tom
