Why did the Poly Knit cycle in GE FF washers pause to soak midway through the agitation? Was the low Speed agitation not enough?

GE wasn't the only washer that did this on their knit/delicate cycle. Lady Kenmore Knit cycle had a 10 minute wash that included a 2 minute soak. Frigidaire 1/18 knit cycle also did periodic pause of agitation during the wash. I actually did like my GE doing this.
I like the concept as well, its nice. Any idea why this was done?
Simply reducing agitation against knit fabrics yet still allowing continued soaking in the detergent bath to remove soil. Knits were stretchy.
Smart move that makes sense.
Also, when ever I think of FF agitation I always think normal speed. Nearly every 2 speed FF I've seen had the shifter bar missing or broken. I like to think that the reduced agitation time, pauses and shorter spins in the poly knit cycle helped to off set the one speed syndrome that came as these washers aged.
