The dryer is the real large capacity for GE and is early 70’s. Not sure what year these large dryers were introduced but I’d say this was one of the first. I’ve looked for a gas one for quite some time with no luck.

My sister's ex mother-in-law had one of those GE dryers in the small motel she owned. She said it was noisy. I heard it running, and it was!
GE Super Sized Dryers
These were interesting dryers that were almost 8 CF in capacity.
Hi Melvin, the early gas ones were 30,000 BTUs, but later GE dropped it down to 22 or 24000 BTUs.
Hi Tom, these dryers were not generally noisy, if you found a loud one it needed repair.
GE started building these extra large dryers in the old Hotpoint laundry plant when HP laundry became the same as GEs laundry appliances.
These GE ELC dryers were the largest in the industry but were a problem for dealers because they would not fit through many doors or fit into many laundry areas in homes, so they often went back to the warehouse on the delivery truck. These larger dryers also cost more to build, box and ship so WP=KM had an advantage with their 7 CF dryers and MT was as usual just left out with their small 6CF dryers.
GE soon came out with a 27" wide extra deep 7 CF dryer that fit in more homes and discontinued the big 8 CF machines in the early 80s.

Hey John, I remember her talking about having it repaired a couple times. I have a feeling they probably overloaded it.
Large dryer
My Americana is from 1973. As John mentioned, it should be rather quiet. Mine had a broken sensor wire and a broken heating element. Did a complete rebuild and repair. It is a very large cabinet and very large drum so it lives in the garage. Does a decent job and I love using it for my bulky comforter.

I still miss this dryer. I got rid of it when I replaced the matching washer and went with the Lady Shredmore pair October 1986. That matching dryer was replaced due to a bad motor 25 years ago last December with the Maytag LDE9824.
My main complaint about the dryer was Low/Delicate heat ONLY worked with timed dry, not the auto sensor cycles. I also preferred having a medium temperature. The dryer only offered low/delicate on Timed. A perm press/knits button and cottons button both offered only high heat. (GE later rectified both this much later in their dryer evolution).

That looks just like the one Maureen (sister's MIL) had. It would have been around '79 or '80 when I would have seen it, so was several years old by then. Guess it didn't like the steady diet of towels and sheets it was fed.

Hi goatfarmer, between you and ovrphil, seem to come across lots of GE's washers...please let me know when you find them...searching everyday for the one...an early '72...I know it's out there
