I have had my eye on a GE washer and dryer for about a year and a half now. I am an appliance repair man and one of my customers had a nice matching set. I told them when something happens that I would like to have them. The day finally came and I have the washer at home now and they are awaiting the dryer to be delivered in another week or so. Then I will have the matching dryer . The dryer works fine but the washer has an issue that has kind of got me stumped. The only thing I can think of is the transmission is locked up. It will spin and drain just fine but when it is time to wash it simply turns the whole drum in circles. The motor overheats and then it shuts down for a few minutes. I have another GE filter flow and the drum can turn I believe it is clockwise but when you turn it counterclockwise it locks up and doesn’t turn. But this one will turn freely either direction. Any input would be appreciated. I have not worked on these washers very much. But I have always liked them. I was so excited to get this one because it has the mini basket.

Jason, I do believe it's normal to turn counterclockwise and lock when it begins to agitate.  Common for all F-Flos I've used.

GE FF Transmission Problems

Hi Jason, You need to replace the transmission, back in the day when GE FFs were popular GE had a great program of affordable rebuilt transmissions readily available for their washers. This was the only thing that made these washers a viable machine because the majority of GE AWs had at least one replacement transmission in its life, unlike any other brand of AW where a transmission was almost never replaced in it serviceable life time.

GE FF AWs were very much like VW cars with air-cooled engines where the engine was a major weak point, but again because on VWs it was so easy to replace the engine people often kept them on the road a long time.

OK thanks for the information. This washing machine has already had a transmission a few years ago. The customer I got it from put a new one in. But yes that was the only thing I could think of was the transmission was locked up inside. The customer said that it would work intermittently. Then it finally just quit altogether.

OK thanks coldspot 66. But there is a local hardware store in my area that use to sell appliances and have a ton of old stock that they told me I am welcome to anytime. And if I remember correctly I remember seeing a transmission sitting up on the shelf. I will have to stop in there here soon and check it out. At the time I was there before I only had Maytag’s so nothing was of interest . But now that I have this GE I seem to recall some parts that I could use. If not I will contact you. Thank you .

Hey Bob. Yes I always loved to watch these filters those work. My mom had one of these when I was a little kid and I always loved to watch it. She never had the mini basket though. Just the lint screen. But I loved watching it just the same . After the GE filter Flo came a harvest gold center dial Maytag. I am by far a Maytag man but I do like GE’s as well. I’m really looking forward to getting the matching dryer for this washer !
