GE Introduces Almond into their New Line

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I have challenged a lot of my designer friends to come up with combinations where Avocado (the hardest vintage color to deal with IMHO) would work well. So far, my own entry was the most pleasing to me and this was adapted from the first kitchen my family ever made. Although no GE 1962 appliance was available in Avocado, I used what we had as the models. And from reruns of Bewitched, I noticed that every single Bell telephone they used on that show was an Avocado Desk model.  I think that colors like Avocado and Coppertone worked best as accents; too much of either was overwhelming and oppressive:

Went today and looked at the old newspapers at historical society. I found the first mention of GE's new Almond color in the early December '76 edition, in an ad for Snyder's Hardware. They were one of the largest GE dealers in southwest Ohio. They had 3 stores at the time, but the local one was closed until late Dec. due to a fire. It was sometime after the first of the year that they had the grand introduction at that location.

Avocado Works With:

White!

Here's a photo of a GE J 757 30-inch slide in range in Avocado; note that it's quite at home with the white cabinets around it.

If something made it necessary for me to have Avocado appliances, the first thing I'd do is to paint the cabinets white. I would not be thrilled with the Avocado, but white would make it bearable.

Ken, I love that design that you presented in those pictures.  The particular shade of avocado appliances with the white cabinets and the dark color counter tops and accents all looks amazing and hot as far as I'm concerned.  I bet it would look just as impressive with coppertone, various hues of yellows and gold, turqoise, and poppy red appliances.  Very nice contrasts!!!

I just love wood.  It makes a serious statement.  It's natural.  Paint is just whitewash of any color.  It just kills me to see houses built with beautiful custom cabinets well-taken care of for decades and someone comes along and paints the damn things.  And that becomes high maintenance.  DUMB!!!  My mother thought she wanted all her beautiful cabinets painted just like everyone else was doing.  My dad knew her well.  He painted one small section of cabinets obscure enough that still allowed the idea to go either way.  She decided she did not like it and hated the wood being abused.  My dad knew her too well, she was too fickle in ways.  But I thought it still looked like hell until they sold the house.

John, I reall seeing a white refrigerator at your home when I visited you! If you ever get bored with it, let me know! Then I might be looking to get a white 40" range from the same year!
;-)

Like John, I hate white on most cars and I don't like it on many appliances too.

But my laundry and kitchen appliances are mostly white! At least, they don't have any plastic parts so no problems with yellowing. White is also the only color that allows to match a 1973 range with a 1963 dishwasher as all other colors have changed between those years!
